RINO Rampage: Utah voters say if you can't beat Republicans, join 'em

Are there any Democrats in Utah anymore? The state's politics seem to get redder and redder every election cycle. And while that trend is due to the overwhelming embrace of conservatism within the state, this year's election cycle could also see a surge in Republican activity from an unlikely source—RINOs.

For those unfamiliar with RINOs, the acronym stands for "Republicans in name only"—a catch-all term for anyone deemed outside of party orthodoxy and one that certainly applies to recently affiliated Republicans who have signed up to agitate from within.

"We're all Democrats, but we know what we're doing," said David Garbett, executive director of the environmental advocacy group O2Utah. Garbett, who ran for Salt Lake City mayor in 2019, not only joined the Republican Party for the current election cycle—he also succeeded at being elected at caucus to represent his neighbors at the state GOP Convention in April.

"It's not a denial of your identity," Garbett said. "I'm shocked at how many [Utah Democrats] say they can't do that."

In Utah, it's nothing new to hear talk of large numbers of Democrats and unaffiliated voters joining the majority party to swing an election, a strategy referred to as "raiding" in political circles. But as national Republicans have drifted farther and farther to the right and with the unchallenged state party increasingly at odds with itself, proponents of party gamesmanship have become unabashed in recent years.

There's a lot of political maneuvering with opposing strategies this season. Like Garbett, many non-Republican voters are openly flocking to the party to participate in its closed primary elections. And other high-profile Democrats have endorsed a plan to stand down on nominating a candidate for U.S. Senate and instead throw the party's resources and support behind independent Senate candidate

They've been doing this for decades. For some reason, they're now open about it. Wonder what that reason could be. Hmmmm.

The bloom is of the ruse!

RINO = Assistant Democrat

Bush League Republicans still run the RNC and dominate the GOP.

Grahamnesty, Murkowsky, Hoeven, Rubio, Tillis, Burr, Lankford, Cornyn, Hyde-Smith, Collins, Sasse, Shelby, Ernst, Blunt, McConnell, Wicker, Portman, Toomey, Rounds, Thune, Daines, Crapo, Cramer, Boozman, Scott, Scott, Cassidy, Capito, Fischer, Moran, Lee, Risch, Sullivan, Barasso and Romney are all Bush League Republicans.

Plus the 145 House members that voted for Liz Cheney in Feb.

We need a thorough House and Senate cleaning.

Who says Utah is getting redder? Hordes of west coast escapees are moving in, and Salt Lake County is blue. The old GOP insiders keep putting up Assistant Dems like Mitt, and they will continue.

I live in OK...and Inhofe and Lankford are and have been assistant Democrats.

Inhofe has been a drunken moron for years.............He should have retired 15 years ago

The best Senator we've had since I've live here was Coburn.

This is the second article I’ve read recently about self-proclaimed Democrats posing as Republicans.

What astounds me is that so many Republicans refuse to believe that a lot of Republicans representatives are, in fact, Democrats. They refuse to believe that RINOs are worse than Democrats. They’ll say that a RINO who votes for Republican issues 80% of the time is better than a Democrat who votes for Republican issues 0% of the time. What they don’t seem to understand is that a lot of those votes are meaningless and that they are a facade in order to fool the constituents into believing that the RINO is not a Democrat.

Democrats run as Republicans in order to get elected. They do a lot more harm from the inside (of the Republican party) than they could ever do from the outside as a Democrat.

Lisa Murkowski is a Democrat. Adam Kinzinger is a Democrat. Liz Cheney is a Democrat.

Yeah, like in South Carolina 30 years ago. The majority Democrats simply changed labels, giving us the likes of Lindsey Graham.

Our side is too gullible.

If AOC announced that she was quitting the Democrat party and joining the Republicans, a lot of Republicans in her district would vote for her. Kevin McCarthy would approve her for a committee chair.

AOC would laugh hysterically on her podcast and then join the other Democrat infiltrators within the Republican party.

"We're all Democrats, but we know what we're doing," said David Garbett,

I'm not familiar with the guy, but I wonder if he meant "democrats" instead of "Democrats"?
