Monday a pro-Putin Russian tabloid published -- then later removed -- a report with an updated toll of 9,861 Russian armed forces deaths in the war in Ukraine, citing the Russian defense ministry.

The report from the tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda originally read: "According to the Russian Defense Ministry, during the special operation in Ukraine, the Russian Armed Forces lost 9861 people killed and 16153 wounded."

'CNN analyzed the website’s HTML code, which indicated that the article was published on Monday at 12:09 a.m. Moscow time.

Seconds after CNN read the original article -- at 9:56 p.m. Moscow time, according to the HTML code -- the story was updated and all references to the death count were removed. That update on the outlet's website came shortly after the article began to get attention from social media posts, which referenced the death count."

"They claimed that "inaccurate information was immediately removed." CNN analysis showed that the update came after 21 hours."

Article was online for 21 hours. “We were hacked” is an excuse. Numbers are real. Nearly 10,000 dead in 1 month of war.

CNN? Mother Jones or NPR not available for an update?

What we know about Russia’s death toll in Ukraine

Why aren't the Communist News Network (CNN) "talking heads" joining their russian comrades and reporting from the front lines?

The numbers don’t sound out of line for a contested invasion against a strong foe. In 5 weeks, the Nazis lost over 17,000 killed in the invasion of Poland. And 27,000 dead in 6 weeks in the invasion of France.

Do you think “Komsomolskaya Pravda” did not report those numbers? Or do you believe that “Komsomolskaya Pravda” did post those numbers but that those numbers are not believable because CNN mentioned the “Komsomolskaya Pravda” article?

The first casualty of war is the truth. Don’t believe the claims of either side.

Rather appropriate that you compare Hitler’s invasion of Poland with Putin invading Ukraine

cuz they’re both murderous monsters stomping on their innocent neighbors, aren’t they?

I don’t dispute the numbers, I just dispute the analysis of the mainstream media that these losses mean Russia is losing or even matter to Putin and the Russian Government in the least. Look at Afghanistan and even back to World War II, Russia’s military doctrine has always been just throw endless hordes of manpower and armaments at the enemy and not worry about casualties because men can be replaced and equipment can be manufactured faster than it is lost. Basically just grind the enemy down by being able to absorb more losses than they can.

I dont believe CNN. They are proven liars. CNN did not provide a link to the original code or to the updated article. We’re just supposed to take their dishonest word for it? No thanks.

Agree for the most part.
However Russia now is not the nation of semi-literate, semi-medieval peasants they were in WWI, WWII and even up to the collapse of the USSR. There’s been a whole generation grow up with shelves having stock, being able to travel, communicate easily with the outside world, etc. In many ways more like modern Europeans then old time Russians. I could be wrong but it seems to this group would have a very hard angry time accepting living in 1950s Russia.

“Numbers are real.”

Since it’s Pravda, it’s more likely that the numbers are understatement of the reality.

Russian official reports put the KIA at about 557 for Russia.

They do casualty notification for next of kin (Spouse/parents) just like we do.

557 (official) vs. >9,000 (CNN expert). Sounds about right for CNN.

It is amazing at how wired down the Internet is these days. I’ve tried to do searches with Google that are .ru for official reports etc. “NOTHING” .ru even comes up. Try it!

“Russia’s military doctrine has always been just throw endless hordes of manpower and armaments at the enemy”

The problem for Russia is that it’s not WW2, or even the Cold War. They don’t have endless manpower and they certainly don’t have anywhere near endless amounts of armaments. They have been in a prolonged drawdown period for over 30 years now.

We were treated to the Atlantic yesterday. Strange world needing to feed confirmation bias like this, but i think Covid did people in.

Yeah that's the Russian way of doing things alright.

Whatever it is just pound the livening daylights out of it until here isn't anything left standing. Vlad's doing a good job flattening Kyiv and everything thing else around. JUst like old Joe Stalin flattened Helsenki. And kill lots of civilians. They don't shoot back. Russians are good at that. Brutal bastards.

You’re 100% correct. There’s two generations of Russians who have things that would have had previous generations shot for even thinking about.

Why do they want to be butchered because Vlad wants to be the new and for ever lasting czar?
