Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has brought death, destruction and debate over historical analogies. Is this the summer of 1914, with great powers stumbling into a horrific global conflict? Or is it the Nazi-Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939? What about Moscow’s 1939-40 Winter War against Finland? Will Vladimir Putin’s gambit end like the Soviet Union’s 1979-89 misadventure in Afghanistan?
Matt Pottinger has been thinking of another conflict. Mr. Putin’s attempted conquest, and his burgeoning partnership with China’s Xi Jinping, reminds Mr. Pottinger of the Korean War. “In 1950, Stalin and Mao and Kim Il Sung badly miscalculated how easy the invasion would be and miscalculated American resolve, much as we’re seeing today,” Mr. Pottinger, 48, who served in the Trump White House’s National Security Council, says this week. “The roles are now reversed, with Xi playing the role of Stalin and Putin playing the role of Mao sending his troops to the slaughter. It’s even conceivable that this war may end in a similar fashion, with some kind of a stalemate in a divided country.”

The Russian trolls will be along to mindlessly insult you for posting this in 3...2....1....
It presents a viewpoint that I had not heard in our ‘vaunted’ legacy media (sarc intended).
Biden is a Putin puppet.
“The Russian trolls will be along to mindlessly insult you for posting this in 3...2....1....”
Not yet. Are you sure they’re coming? Please point them out as they arrive. Thanks!
Why are you Russian troll if you don’t swallow the pro Ukraine propaganda?
Russia is just a paranoid nation. They’d look for enemies if they were free and capitalist.
I don’t know. Why do you think you’re a Russian troll?
Opinions are like certain body parts...everyone has one.
Some are based on facts, others on feelings.
It has been pointed out to me that the 'Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances' apparently specifies that the parties (including the US) seek immediate UN Security Council action, in the event that Ukraine was invaded. If the US actually does that and gets a military commitment from the UN to intervene in Ukraine, then the comparison to Korea might become more appropriate...
Didn’t a certain administration in the early 90s make certain they sold all government assets for kopeks on the ruble and become capitalist? I’m fairly certain there were a couple advisors sent there that helped them in this endeavor. It was all very altruistic.
The US shuld actually do that. Of course this time Russia won’t be out in a snit and will veto.
That’s the same thought I had, a new viewpoint. Being a student of Russian history I went straight to the Finnish debacle, but the Korean one really comes a lot closer to events on both the strategic and tactical level. The only issue is that there is not a large scale supplier of extra troops like Vietnam and Korea both had.
Although there could be fresh infusions of troops on the Ukrainian side from the former Soviet countries. They might like the idea of taking Mother Russia down a peg.
I read that Russia, being a permanant member of the Security Council, vetoed any UN action.
Entirely predictable, I guess...
The Scissors strategy transforms into that of “one clenched fist”.... Anatoliy Golitsyn.
Pooty poot is pulling mercenaries from Central Asia.
You’re the troll you 🤡. You’ve been here a year and you have the balls to call longtime members trolls and your goofy troll watch schtick. GFY.
Possibly, a sternly worded letter will ensue.
