A British man who travelled to Ukraine to join the military fight against Russia's invasion says he left the warzone amid fears he was facing a "suicide mission".

Ben Spann told Sky News he did not tell his wife or 16-year-old son that he was going to Ukraine to take up arms, despite the fact he has never served in the military and has no ties to the war-torn country.

The 36-year-old, from Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, said he spent five days in a safe house in western Ukraine with four ex-British soldiers - and at one point had a gun pointed at his head after the property was searched by a "Ukrainian SWAT team".

Mr Spann, who runs an anti-knife crime charity having previously been involved in growing cannabis, told Sky News he wanted to help defend Ukraine because he believed “it was the right thing to do” but admits it was “an absolute nightmare”.

โ€” In 1967, Polish mercenary Rafal Ganowicz was asked what it felt like to take human life, "I wouldn't know, I've only killed Communists."

Now THAT was a mercenary!

We have an entire cabal of armchair warriors here who could use a similar education. They have played too many video games, watched too many action TV shows and movies, and despite having no actual physical experience believe that they know what this is all about. It is more comical than sad here, but we have a bunch of idiots in congress that are just as screwed up.

There are a lot of other things he could have done instead, if he “wanted to do the right thing”. Like participating in a drag queen story time for kids at a local library. Or looting a store to protest systemic racism. Or putting 3 masks on his kids.

Is seems Mr Spann ran headlong into people who want no part of Biden’s Drag Queen democracy.

Probably looking for drugs.

What I got from the article is that the 4 ex-soldiers stayed on to fight and this moron went back home.

All for the best. The chaff washes out as it’s supposed to.

Yes. Of course the Ukrainians checked out the newcomers, and the newcomers probably expected to be given some sort of direction and/or weaponry. Strange story.

played too many video games, watched too many action TV shows and movies, . . . having no actual physical experience

We are several generations past where most men have even experienced getting a bloody nose in a fist fight.

There are a number of stories coming out of Ukraine that look less like "gamer can't handle real combat" and more like "Ukraine purposely putting citizens from NATO countries into harms way in order to force NATO to provide more direct support".

Despite whether or not particular individuals are qualified to be mercenaries, if when they arrive in Ukraine they are given little or no training and insufficient firepower to defend themselves and do real harm to the enemy then this appears very suspicious.

The war in Ukraine is not a video game, but it is also not some sitcom that will necessarily have a happy ending, despite the president being a comedian.

My opinion about Putin is he is a mad dog killer taking up breathing air. But I have serious concerns about the lowlife scum bag media jumping in with false stories. The same media that lied for years about Trump and Russia.
Now we know it was, in fact, Russia and Democrats.

Late night BS sessions at the local and a credit card can lead to unplanned excursions.

Saw one happen in NYC back in the early 70s. Hanging out in a gin mill after work, two co-workers kept spouting off about going to LA. Credit card was on the bar. One of our crew went out and hailed a cab. Neither wanted to back down, so they got in and we gave the cabbie enough to get them to JFK.
Next morning some of us were on the phones trying to talk their wives out of leaving, telling them that the boys would be back on the first flight and that rather than packing, they could use the time planning their retribution.

As one of the cross country travellers said later, “It was like buying a brand new color TV...taking it home...and kicking in the screen before plugging it in.”

(I worked with quite a crew back then...heh, heh)

It seems Western societies are filled with irrational people who are incapable of rational thought and are completely given themselves over to emotion.

Orangeman bad, must be destroyed. The TeeVee told me.

Putin is bad, Ukraine is good. The TeeVee told me.

Therefore, in a fit of irrational and raw emotion, this guy literally abandons his wife and kid to go take up arms as a mercenary in a foreign country, with absolutely no training or background whatsoever. His raw emotions, and nothing more, drove him to go and do this.
