Belgium delays nuclear energy exit 10 years due to Ukraine war

Brussels (AFP) – Belgium on Friday delayed by a decade a plan to scrap nuclear energy in 2025, spooked by the huge rise in energy prices due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"The federal government has decided to take the necessary steps to extend the life of two nuclear reactors by ten years," Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said in a statement.

"This extension will strengthen our country's independence from fossil fuels in a turbulent geopolitical environment," he added.

The push to 2035 comes as calls are rising that neighbouring Germany, Europe's biggest economy, should also rethink its nuclear energy exit, but ministers in Berlin last week doubled down on their country's no atom pledge despite the price shock.

Europe is scrambling to find ways to wean itself off its energy dependency on Russia, which provides 40 percent of Europe's gas needs, mainly to Germany, Italy and several central European countries.

Prices have skyrocketed for Europeans since the invasion by Russia of Ukraine and EU leaders will meet next week to agree on fresh emergency measures to soften the blow for consumers and businesses.

I assume they’ll send a Thank You Card to Putin for slapping them into reality.

I think the people who believe “No Guns Allowed” signs prevent shootings are the same ones who want to ban nuclear energy. They’ve conflated having nuclear energy with having nuclear bombs*. There is a casual relationship, but it’s the same relationship that having a steel mill has to making guns. But these aren’t logical thinkers. They’re reacting emotionally and they vote and donate money and are useful idiots.

* I realized this relationship when I listened to an Australian admiral outlining the plan for Australia to build nuclear submarines. He fell all over himself explaining that having a nuclear sub in no way implied or gave Australia the ability to build nuclear weapons. I wondered why he felt it so urgently necessary to explain and deny that nuclear submarines equaled nuclear weapons and it suddenly clicked for me that some people had so little knowledge on the topic that they believed the one meant the other.

It’s amazing how outsourcing energy policy to an autistic Nordic teenager hasn’t been working out well. Who would have guessed?

Because, since at least the sixties the media, the education cartel (except the scientific disciplines) and the de-industrialists have pushed the false meme that nuclear power stations are bombs waiting to happen.

I forget the terms of the post war agreement to Germany’s surrender in WWII. However, I recall that Belguim (who runs the Congo Administratively) got free Nuclear Energy from W. Germany for 80 or 90 years. This used to be popular knowledge for those living in Belguim because they laughed about their freeways/Autoban having been lite up nation-wide at night on Free Germany energy.

One of the ways socialism is a parasite and was enabled in Europe in prior to the 1968-69-70 Value Added Taxes (Temp) was this and the Marshall Plan. As the Marshall plan ran out, the VATs kicked in.

EUrope in the West canabilized Africa and SE Asia for pennies on the dollar resources and does so to this day.

Europe would collaspe without literally stealing from other people.

Socialism cannot survive on its own merrit.

The USA is becoming more European with the advent of implementation of the NWO and we are becoming a nation of leaders who loot at the Natonal/State level.

Putting Law Enforcement in the Public Eye and giving LE authority over politicians can right much of the wrong in the world today.

The Founders knew {and said} the US Constitution and this form of a Republic can only be maintained by a God fearing, family centric {real man/woman/children} society.

We may be past the point of no return and the USA will go the way of the Roman Empire {in half the time, because our smart phones are moving us along the path of self destruction}.

“They’ve conflated having nuclear energy with having nuclear bombs*.”

I saw it too during the Cold War. It’s a very effective tactic of the Left, who do know better.

Jumper "Belgium got free Nuclear Energy from W. Germany for 80 or 90 years" -- any proof for that? I couldn't find any linkage on German or Belgian government or non-governmental sites
