Ukraine presumably doesn't need too many male versions of Jessica Lynch with minimal or no combat skills or experience, given the pre-existing handicap of a language barrier with foreign fighters.

You assume the Ukraine Army is still an organized, professional army - to the extent it ever was. That's very debatable. At this point, they may just want bodies. Germany conscripted young boys and old men at the end of WWII.

Also, having Westerners showing up for the fight - and getting killed - is great PR for a Ukraine Government trying to drag NATO into this.
