Gov. Noem rails against National Park Service over Mt. Rushmore fireworks permit
Denver Gazette ^ | 3-18-22

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem issued a statement Tuesday condemning the National Park Service's decision to deny a permit for fireworks at Mount Rushmore for the second time since President Joe Biden took office.

"Mount Rushmore is the best place in America to celebrate our nation's birthday — I just wish President Biden could see that," Noem said. "Last year, the President hypocritically held a fireworks celebration in Washington, D.C., while denying us our own event. This year, it looks like they are planning to do the same."

Rushmore's Independence Day celebrations typically last 26 days, occurring from June 15-July 10. Noem began the tradition back in 2020, after a 10-year hiatus. Former President Donald Trump famously made an appearance.

Last year, NPS similarly denied a permit for fireworks at the memorial. Shortly before the event, on Mar 29, Mount Rushmore saw the largest wildfire in its recorded history. As a result, the whole park was closed for three days.

Noem is currently litigating the event's 2021 cancellation in the United States Eighth Circuit. This week, the governor's office reminded the court that there was a pending application for the 2022 event. Within 24 hours of the statement, NPS denied the permit.

Fireworks, an American tradition since July 4, 1777. I guess I can understand why Big Progressive Guy opposes them, it's must be the four canceled Presidents. If only they could be replaced with truely great Presidents. Biden, Obama, Clinton and maybe FDR, maybe Wilson. Joe would attend.

At least there'll be fireworks in DC. Actual fireworks, not referring to gunfire. Tourists and rural hicks don't need entertainment.

Do it anyway and dare them to arrest you. You’re the governor for crying out loud!

Fireworks sanctuary state.

If California can have its own EPA rules and immigration laws than South Dakota can shoot fireworks off of Mt. Rushmore.

Democrats don’t want people loving America, proud of America, praising America, celebrating America.

It interrupts their efforts to inculcate hatred for America.

CO2 releases, right? Fire danger will be cited, though the “threat” of wild fires hasn’t been used to stop the celebrations before.

Oh. Wait. Trump appeared there! Must stop patriotic displays because of Covid spreading!

IIRC, a documentary from a few years back, stated that the figures on Rushmore are getting more and more fragile every year from weathering.

The explosions from fireworks could possibly fracture them...................

This is operative only when a Republican is president:

Why is Mount Rushmore offensive?
For many Native Americans, the 79-year-old Mount Rushmore, with four white faces carved into the granite, is a symbol of similar oppression, especially offensive because it's located in South Dakota's Black Hills, which they regard with reverence.

Thats what I was thinking. Do it, make them arrest you & shut down Mt. Rushmore.
Then explain to everyone you did it because of fireworks. Morons!

Maybe you should retroactively DENY All Permits for Water, Sewer and Electricity to ALL Federal Properties in your State, and DISCONNECT THEM!

I wouldn’t put it past the DOJ to declare her a domestic terrorist and arrest her. The left have no shame and no rules when it comes to anyone even remotely to the Right.

We live in a Ponderosa Pine forest that is bone dry by July. The month-long fireworks by amateurs scare me to death. The fireworks set off over the many lakes around us are fine, but fireworks have no place in dry forests.

It’s another example of the Biden administration’s bizarre pandering to his lunatic base.

In this case it’s fringe activists who claim that Mt Rushmore is built on land that was “stolen” from Native Americans. For them, the fireworks are an offensive celebration of the disposession of the lands of Native Americans.

This comes on top of the general hatred of American history and traditions that’s part and parcel of Democrat Party politics. They mock and sneer at ANY celebration of the 4th of July. They despise monuments that give honor to great statesmen and patriots like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

These are the real reasons why National Park Service won’t permit 4th of July fireworks at Mount Rushmore.

Ponderosa Pine forests are defined by frequent fires. Preventing them only exposes the trees to higher temperature fires at further intervals that damage them worse than frequent fires.
