Top Trump ally gears up for Romney primary challenge

Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes, who backed Donald Trump’s efforts to challenge the 2020 election results, is preparing for a 2024 Senate run that could pit him against Sen. Mitt Romney in a GOP primary.

Reyes, who has been elected statewide three times, in recent weeks has discussed the matter with key players in Utah politics and with allies of the former president, according to a person who is familiar with Reyes' plans. Reyes will make a final decision and likely announce his intentions in May.

“Sean is very seriously considering running, regardless if Mitt runs or not,” the person said. “He’s confident that regardless of what Sen. Romney wants to do, he’s going to pursue this.”

Romney hasn’t publicly discussed his 2024 plans. The 75-year-old former GOP presidential nominee and Massachusetts governor is being encouraged by some anti-Trump Republicans to run again for president, though multiple political operatives in Utah believe Romney is likely to retire from politics at the end of his current Senate term.

“I guarantee Trump will come up with somebody,” said Carson Jorgensen, chair of the Utah Republican Party. “There’s enough vitriol there that no matter if Trump is running for president, he will run a candidate against Romney.”

Feelepino + younger. Romney as senator was vanity. Just to stick it to Trump when he could. A CEO wasting 6 years of his life as one in a hundred. As CEO perhaps he can clean up BLM.

Romney’s not running, he knows he has no chance. He betrayed the people that voted for him.

I hope you're right.

But FWIW:

These guy’s egos trump their intelligence.

If he doesn’t run I think it’s due to age.

Unfortunately, the seat is his if he wants it.

I just don't believe it. He wouldn't have been elected in 2018 if it weren't for Trump's endorsement. I'm sure mutt told Trump he would be a solid ally. That's a problem with Trump, he takes people at their word. Trump, like the laws and Constitution of this country assume people of good character. That is no longer the case, unfortunately.

All he needs is a bunch of bumperstickers:

"Reyes Trumps Romney!"

He is considered Mormon royalty.

Not anymore. According to a cousin of mine who is in the state GOP committee, he is barely more popular in Utah than Liz Cheney is in Wyoming. Almost all of his remaining base are Democrats and RINO Republicans plus a few clueless conservatives who are unaware of his treachery.

It is worth putting him on your Facebook feed just to read all the priceless comments.

He could run as a Democrat and probably get it for the asking. But the trouble with that is he would lose the clueless conservatives who vote "R" with the same reflex that Massholes vote "D".

Need to get rid of the governor also. He’s a mutt wannabe, i.e. another assistant democrat.

If Romney did get the GOP nomination, he would get fewer votes in 2024 than he did in 2012, regardless of whom the Dems nominate.

He would guarantee another term of a Dem president.

“Romney’s not running, he knows he has no chance. He betrayed the people that voted for him.”

Agreed. no matter how much money he raises (ala Liz Cheney), he’s gonna get his butt handed to him in an endorsing convention or primary.

He doesn’t wanna go out that way. He’s announce retirement, claiming he wants to spend more time away from the “vitriol” of politics and more time with his family.
