Biden moving to narrow gender pay gap for federal workers

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is marking Equal Pay Day by taking new steps aimed at ending the gender pay gap for federal workers and contractors.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday is signing an executive order that encourages the government to consider banning federal contractors from seeking information about job applicants’ prior salary history. And a new Labor Department directive is aimed at strengthening federal contractors’ obligations to audit payrolls to help guard against pay disparities based on gender, race or ethnicity.

The Office of Personnel Management also is considering a regulation to address the use of prior salary history in hiring and setting compensation for federal workers.

Equal Pay Day is designed to call attention to how much longer women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year.

Data shows that while the pay gap is at its smallest ever, the coronavirus pandemic has altered women’s labor force participation so that “what we’re seeing is an artificial narrowing,” said Jasmine Tucker, director of research at the National Women’s Law Center.

How is there a gender pay gap in unionized jobs? Typically collective bargaining for a contract is going to spell out labor rates. If the collective bargaining agreement says women get less than men then the union and the federal government are already breaking the law. Something doesn’t sound right here.

Federal employees are paid on a GS (Government Service) scale based on their job classification. There are no adjustments made to the GS scale for the claimed gender of the employee.

There is no gap in pay caused by systemic institutional discrimination against women.

“Look, squirrel !!”

Sadly, this will appeal to women voters. They believe the pay gap is real, and that it’s 100% sexism. No amount of rational discussion is accepted.

Biden’s handlers aren’t all stupid. Most of them maybe, but not all of them.

I worked for the feds for 30 years. Women are vastly over-represented in the higher pay grades GS 10 and above. So, the gender pay gap is in favor of women.

I don’t know what world these guys are living in—we had equal pay rules going back to the 80’s. At least in the fields I irked in.

Government hiring manager: So, tell me about your previous experience and qualifications for this position developing our social credit software to track white extremists.

Applicant: I picked up dog poop. I'm reliable, show up on time, and do high quality work.

Government hiring manager: You're hired. What are your salary requirements?

Applicant: I made $250,000 per year in my last job.

Government hiring manager: OK, how does $300,000 sound?

Applicant: Great! When can I start?

It happens when a woman leaves to have kids. If they were out four months, their annual raise would reflect the time out of work. Over ten years, and two kids, that gap could grow.

Most companies “fixed” that decades ago.

Of course the government talks a good game, but they don’t apply market adjustments to their world because they are idiots.

This is not about equality it is about “equity” which means, pay women the same as men who have more experience.

If employers could hire women for less money than they could hire men, men would remain unemployed.

This is all virtue signaling.

It is already illegal to offer different pay for men vs women. Oh, and how come a Fed regulation even admits that there are men or women?

Anyhoo, what is the deal about what an applicant received in a previous job somewheres else? So what?

Meaningless crappola to appease the NPC’s. But, I am sure some airhead in HResources will go nuts on this.

Ditto! Having worked in the federal sector for 35 years, and worked the last 10 years as a federal subcontractor, I can
unequivocally attest that the above statement is absolutely true.

During my 22 years as a civilian historian for the US Army, all were paid according to the GS pay scale. The only difference between pay for 2 people on the same level, such as GS-11, was if they had different years of longevity. When I was a new GS-11, I got less money that the female GS-11 who had been there 10 years. The difference was due to LONGEVITY in the pay grade, NOT our sex. Thus I’m wondering where Biden is finding this hidden pay discrimination because of one’s sex.
