Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is to meet President Joe Biden at a summit Wednesday, has suggested that the hundreds of people arrested for rioting at the U.S. Capitol are being subjected to “persecution for political opinions.”
Putin is likely to come under strong criticism from Biden at their meeting in Geneva for moves against his political opponents in Russia, particularly the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the detention of thousands of demonstrators protesting his arrest, and the outlawing of Navalny’s organizations as extremist.
“You are presenting it as dissent and intolerance toward dissent in Russia. We view it completely differently,” he said in an interview with NBC News broadcast Monday. He then pointed to the Jan. 6 insurrection in Washington when protesters barged into the Capitol to try to halt the count of electoral votes to certify Biden’s election victory over Donald Trump.
“Do you know that 450 individuals were arrested after entering the Congress? ... They came there with political demands,” he said.

Putin and Biden are going to meet and talk?
Good Lawd. God help us.
They can take a few of our own with him.
Putin is right, once again. He’s actually pretty straightforward and doesn’t care about optics, compared to US political types.
It WAS an assassination. “Pick the first person through the door, nand shoot him. The rst will stop.”
And the Jan 6 people ARE political prisoners.
Donald Rumsfeld was an ardent Saddam groupie.
What I know of his firearms safety in the past, and what I saw of him that day with his booger hook on the bang switch sweeping his colleagues, she wasn’t of “assassinated”. She was murdered by Forrest Gump with a gun having a Negligent Discharge. And they covered it up. Which makes them eligible to be charged with other crimes.
Was last year. note date of article
You are wrong, he was NOT hit by a fire extinguisher, but was probably sprayed with pepper spray. https://www.thewrap.com/brian-sicknick-cause-of-death-cnn-media/
According to the Medical Examiner: “Medical examiner Dr. Francisco J. Diaz indicated in his autopsy findings that the chemical sprayed at Sicknick didn’t kill him, though the riot itself is not blameless: “All that transpired played a role in his condition.” As a presumably fit young man, he died of two strokes the next day.
I feel bad about how our patriots are being treated but Putin is trying to gain sympathetic support by trying to pit conservatives against Liberals here. He is trying to roil our political issues here in the US. I’m not going to bite.
To Putin and Zelensky I say a pox on both houses.
Excellent comment !!!
Since you apparently don’t know much about why we were in Syria, I will add that the 911 hijackers of the Frankfurt Cell were mentored by two Syrians, one a Syrian intelligence official whose cover was as a textile businessman in Germany, the other a cleric who acted as spiritual guide for the cell before they set out on their mission to the States. Atta the lead hijacker was an Egyptian with ties to Syria, where he did his college thesis on urban planning in Aleppo, the city that was the gateway for fighters sent into Iraq to fight our allies the Kurds. He was a member of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood. Another member of the Frankfurt Cell was the son of a former Warsaw Pact/East German secret police official. Syria ws also behind an attempt to poison US troops in Jordan after Saddam fell in Iraq and his generals and Baatb party officials fled to Syria. Syria waz also home to Hezbollah leader Imad Mugniyeh, who tortured to death US CIA station chief Buckley, planned and carried out the bombing of the French and US marine barracks in Lebanon, and a string of terrorist attacks as a proxy for the IranRussiaSyria axis. Syria was also where North Korean experts were caught working on a joint effort to develop nuclear weapons.
Putin attacked Ukraine without any due process, and has killed many thousands there including women and children without due process. I don’t know if consulting with the European countries most impacted counts as due process, but it should.
No wonder Putin is recruiting Syrians to come as “volunteers” to fight in Ukraine.
best to just ignore any statement that potin makes about the current political situation in the United States. all that he is doing is picking at a scab in hopes of getting it infected.
You might notice that I used quotes around the claim that he was “hit by a fire extinguisher”. I am well aware that the media and many politicians lied about that - I even posted that his death “due to that” was a lie, so I think we agree. Yet you are contradicting me.
I happen to believe he was likely murdered by the deep state, which also accidentally released the story of his death prematurely. “He died.” “Actually he’s still alive.” “Ok, now he’s dead.” I understand the CIA likes to give people strokes because it looks natural. Note his body was very rapidly creamated, which is consistent with an attempt to destroy any traces of any poison.
You are repeating propaganda. No cops died at or because of the protest. The only deaths were protesters.
Well....she was. We all saw it right there on video. She was unarmed and was shot dead when they easily could have subdued her for the heinous crime of crawling through a broken window.
and the capital police held that all of this was just fine and that no crime occurred.
The article is from last June, so factor in the then-recent 2021 round of sanctions imposed for numerous reasons (including the poisoning of Aleksey Navalny). The Ashli Babbitt matter was an obvious retaliatory jab (Putin *is* a keen observer of our internal politics).
It's interesting that comments from our State Department last year made it clear that no wider sanctions against the Russian energy sector were being entertained, specifically because any such efforts would boomerang and cause higher fuel prices here and in Europe.
Oh, and Putin is absolutely right that the Jan 6 political prisoners are just that.
The vast majority have been charged not for anything violent they did but for simply strolling around inside the capital building. Nevermind the fact that the capital police opened the doors and literally stood by doing nothing to stop them or tell them that it would be a crime to enter.
and these people have been held in terrible conditions where they have suffered abuse by prison guards for a year or more after being denied their 8th amendment right to bail for a misdemeanor. Furthermore they’ve been tried in the hyperpartisan DC courts where objective judges and jurors simply do not exist.
Compare and contrast that with how the violent Klantifa rioters were treated in Jan 2016....in the various Klantifa/BLM riots in the summer of 2020 or how rioters who attacked the police guarding Rand Paul and his wife at the 2020 Republican Convention were treated. They were all let go and charges were dropped - despite them unquestionably committing acts of violence.
Would any objective person looking at the grossly disparate treatment these two sets of people have received conclude anything other than the Jan 6 defendants are political prisoners? No way.
well he aint wrong,,,
Not true. He had UN and Syrias permission whereas Obama and McCain did NOT.
