A Russian warship that attacked Snake Island in a video that went viral for its portrayal of Ukrainian defiance has been destroyed, according to new reports.
Just days after Russia invaded Ukraine, the Russian warship Vasily Bykov ordered Ukrainian soldiers manning a Black Sea outpost on Snake Island to surrender.
What happened next made headlines around the world.
"I suggest you surrender your weapons and capitulate," the Russian warship captain said.
The Ukrainians manning the island had no plans to surrender.
"Russian warship, go f*** yourself," the Ukrainian soldier said.
The portrayal of defiance went viral, airing on cable news stations and social media sites soon after.
Initial reports indicated the soldiers had died in battle, but later updates indicated they had been taken captive.
The Times of London reports that the warship Vasily Bykov was hit during a firefight after the Ukrainians used a smaller vessel to lure the Russian ship closer to shore where a hidden missile battery could open fire.
New video shows the Ukrainian missile battery unloading on the Russian warship. After the missiles stopped firing, you can see a small light in the video. That's the Vasily Bykov on fire, and the gunner is quick to celebrate his hit.

Yep. We’ll get the truth that the idiot Russian skipper was overconfident and brought his ship in too close to shore resulting in the deaths of officers and crew and the loss of the entire ship.
*If* the skipper was alive after the Ukrainians hit it I’m sure Pidor Putin had him promptly executed and that’s the truth I imagine we’ll find out. Assuming there’s any Russian navy left to talk about that truth when this war is over.

This depends on the size of the smaller ship and the weapons available to the attacker.
You might recall that up until the Trump Administration that US warships in the Arab Gulf were typically helpless against small Iranian boats of less than 15 meters in length. Trump had the Navy deploy old fashioned mount .50 weapons and gave the Navy authority to use them which fixed that problem.
The Russian ship was probably configured for taking on ships similar to itself and the smaller ship posed problems for target acquisition.
Had this encounter been out at sea instead of close to shore the Russian ship would have no doubt eventually won the day against the smaller ship. But unbeknownst to the Russian skipper his enemy was not the smaller ship but instead a very adequate shore battery.
Good thinking on your part. There's every possibility the footage may have been cobbled together from a 1994 Serbian war movie. /sarc ... I think.

Defiant soldiers... i.e., the ones that surrendered?
Granted the loss of one ship is typically a small issue but it’s a bigger issue when you consider the limited number of Russian ships available in the Black Sea.
Add to this the very high probability that Turkey (a NATO member) will not allow replacement warships to enter the Black Sea and now the Russians are facing the potential reduction of their Black Sea fleet by unconventional tactics.
