LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- Los Angeles County residents can begin applying for a guaranteed income program on March 31, the county announced Friday.
The "Breathe: LA County's Guaranteed Income Program" will give 1,000 qualified residents $1,000 a month for three years. After meeting the qualifications, recipients will be selected at random.

This was tried in the Netherlands and, I believe, Sweden. The project was shut down in both locations with no word on why. At least in the Netherlands, it wasn’t a lack of funding. A news agency requested comments on why it was shut down and they were ignored. My guess is that something similar happened to the recipients as happens to most lottery winners. They are destroyed by their luck. They get into drugs or gambling or some other destructive behavior. It was obvious from the comments when the Netherlands experiment started that the proponents were rapturous over all the good things it would do. Then, they shut it down with zero comments. Obviously, it didn’t go as planned and I think they had the best of intentions. When it caused damage, that’s when they shut it down.
Of course there are strings. Race is probably a string.
What’s the monthly cost of living in L.A.?
Let me guess at 2 rules:
1) Applicants with nnn points are eligible.
2) Applicants who are veterans have their points reduced by 30%.
If I ever win millions in the lottery, I plan on starting “The Lucky Break Foundation.” I’d sponsor about 6-12 families for a year: Pay their rent one month or utilities the next, get their kids school clothes, buy them all Christmas and birthday presents, etc. The families could only participate for one year and I’d choose them from my church or local community. So I think this is a great idea...for somebody like Bill Gates to pay for with his own effing money!
With Brandon’s inflation, the third years checks will only be worth $246.
Can I identify as a family living in La county?
It does sound like an interesting social experiment and possibly cheaper and more insightful than some of the things the federal government has funded (I know it is California.)
I hope they actually produce at least one truthful non-woke peer reviewed paper about this project for future efforts to consider.
They will demand renewal at the end of the “temporary “ “trial “ period.
