The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church said his country’s invasion of Ukraine was a divine mission in opposition to gay rights.
According to a Monday report in the Moscow Times, Patriarch Kirill backed Russia’s “military operation” in Ukraine and called it a conflict over “which side of God humanity will be on.”
He drew attention to Ukraine‘s gay-pride parades and pro-LGBT laws, and called them a “loyalty test” and an example of Ukraine’s attempting to refashion itself in the cultural image of NATO nations.
“Pride parades are designed to demonstrate that sin is one variation of human behavior. That’s why in order to join the club of those countries, you have to have a gay pride parade,” he said in his sermon for Forgiveness Sunday, the last Sunday before the start of Lent in the Orthodox calendar.
“We know that if people or countries reject these demands, they are not part of that world, they become strangers to it,” Kirill said.
But, he noted, Russia and the breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine, which de facto broke away from Ukraine in 2014 and run by pro-Russia separatists, have “fundamentally rejected” those tests.
“For eight years there have been attempts to destroy what exists in Donbas,” Kirill said. “In Donbas there is a rejection, a fundamental rejection of the so-called values that are offered today by those who claim world power.”

This is a propaganda smokescreen. If Putin and Kirill were on the side of Christianity in Ukraine, they wouldn’t be send in Muslims to kill and terrorize Christians. With that said, the EU/NATO, and the US under the Democrats, hand bad actors around the world a huge propaganda weapon by making degeneracy in the form of LGBT perversion, abortion, etc. synonymous with Western civilization.

This is an appeal to certain segments of fundamentalist Christianity to give them Putin cover. It is pure propaganda. The Russian Orthodox Church since Stalin has been tied to the state, the Moscow Patriarch has long been rumored to be a former colleague of Putin in the KGB back from the old USSR days.
Vox Day is gonna have a field day with this one.
His Holiness is right about the degeneracy of much of contemporary western “values.”. Putin is correct about that too, but more as a pragmatist than a moralist. He understands that Orthodoxy and its values can give Russia a firm foundation that makes a decent society possible. How much Putin actually believes in any of it himself, I won’t even attempt to guess. One of the Russian Metropolitans commented the other day that a person can’t cross himeelf, pray to God, and then go out and kill people. I assume he meant in a war of agression. Those are Orthodox values too.
In another forum I read a comment that this is a battle to defend Holy Orthodoxy. Someone here said that Putin has built a nuclear-armed lifeboat for Christianity. I am not a pacifist and I accept just war theory, but those comments seem close to blasphemy. Is God so weak that He relies on us to blow people away on His behalf?

That was the Chalcedonian Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria who made that comment, not a Russian prelate. And, he’s right.
It was tied to the State long before Stalin, as far back as Peter the Great or further. Nothing has changed. It’s the state church of Russia, and everything it does is done in Russia’s national interest.
