What is Putin thinking? Spy agencies size up Ukraine moves

WASHINGTON -- "I personally think he's unhinged. I really worry about his acuity and balance right now." Former U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper gave this assessment of Russian President Vladimir Putin on CNN this week.

As Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues to escalate and threats of nuclear conflict enter the picture, understanding Putin's mental state has become a matter of growing urgency for Western intelligence agencies -- a difficult task, as the ex-KGB agent is a "hard target" for espionage, and notoriously difficult to read.

"Putin appears isolated and reliant on a small coterie of advisers who have not told him the truth about how difficult and costly conquering Ukraine is turning out to be. Analysts see a leader on edge, fueled by paranoia after underestimating the unified resolve of the West, and at risk of lashing out when he feels cornered," the Washington Post wrote Tuesday.

An FBI report on the topic cited a source saying Putin "'expressed extreme anger' over Western sanctions put in place in response to his attack on Ukraine and 'felt that the sanctions had escalated the situation faster than he expected and beyond what he considered to be appropriate,'" according to CNN.

But media reports said the report acknowledged that the source "may have provided the information to influence and inform" Washington's decision-making, possibly to persuade the U.S. to ease up on sanctions.

I doubt that Putin is in a rage or a funk. Uncontrolled emotions would be inconsistent with experience as a KGB agent and with being a judo player.

"I personally think he's unhinged. I really worry about his acuity and balance right now." ...James Clapper gave this assessment of Putin

Clapper is a liar, in fact a perjurer, but that shouldn't deter Neocons from bowing in his direction.

All the wrong people. If that does not give you a moment of pause, you may be a lemming.

James Clapper on Putin: "I personally think he's unhinged."

Clapper is projecting again.

James Clapper is a traitor to the USA, always has been. He is a liberal, a liar, and has committed crimes against this nation.

Let’s keep in mind that they’re called “intelligence agencies” for the same reason the big guy is called “Tiny.”

What is Vlad thinking? Probably at the moment that he’s safe from Hillary and Bill. But he’s still checking under his car every time he goes out for a drive.

When I saw that Clapper is a source for this information, I stopped reading.

One of the most dispicable people in the swamp.

Okay Putin is angry. I saw a youtube title that said Putin's body language indicated anger. Fine, Putin is angry.

Do I believe Putin is misinformed? No. He wouldn't be angry if he believed everything was going as planned.

What about the Ukrainian people? They're angry too and terrified. 3% have left their country because of Putin. They didn't ask for this.

Do I care what James Clapper says. No.

Me, I think the lessons of WWII are clear. We don't allow naked aggression like this. I say we give Putin a short deadline to withdraw. And then we give his forces a chance to surrender if he refuses to withdraw. And then we bomb any remaining forces loyal to him into oblivion.

That's my opinion from my recliner.

I imagine he’s thinking how happy he’ll be when he, Trump and Xi get rid of the NWO and they don’t have to do this stuff anymore. Soon everyone will be hating on Xi when he goes into Taiwan.

If Xi was smart he would wait a while and absorb Russia when they are down first. That would give him the oil and grain he desperately needs. Talk about being a world power then. Xi will look good to the world when he stops Putin.

On one hand he is backing Putin to go destroy himself which will leave a nice vacuum north of china. Right out of the Art of War. Let your enemy destroy themselves.

In the meantime the US is financing China by us buying their junk and all the manufacturing we have moved there. XI is probably funding the Eco nuts here which stalemates us in manufacturing and mining here.

When I want to see what the US Intelligence agencies think in general, or what the execrable James Clapper thinks in particular, I will look into an un-flushed toilet.

They are not our friends, they do not serve our interests, and are an actual threat to freedom.
