‘It means the end of Putin’: Former NATO commander Wesley Clark explains Ukraine war
NY Post ^ | 3/2/22 | Wesley Clark

Posted on 03/03/2022 1:10:30 PM PST by Bloodandgravy

Q: What moves could the United States make beyond sanctions right now that would help protect Ukraine?

A: The most important move now is for the president to announce Vladimir Putin is a war criminal. Really. This gives enormous diplomatic leverage and a greater incentive to help the campaign.

... Q: You advocate a no-fly zone?

A: Absolutely. The airspace belongs to Ukraine. If they ask for help, why can’t we fly airplanes in there? Say, oh, it’s because of the Russians, they might come up and contest it. That’s the Russians’ problem. They’re going to get shot down. Okay, then what? Putin says he’s going to use a nuclear weapon. If we back away from that challenge, if we don’t confront it, this is like a two-pair poker bluff, for incredibly high stakes.

“NATO bombed strategic economic and societal targets, such as bridges, military facilities, official government facilities, and factories, using long-range cruise missiles to hit heavily defended targets, such as strategic installations in Belgrade and Pristina.

The NATO air forces also targeted infrastructure, such as power plants...water-processing plants and the state-owned broadcaster, causing much environmental and economic damage throughout Yugoslavia.”

I’m so sure the Japanese cared who owned the airspace over Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The end of Putin is a bit strong. Kim Il-sung invaded South Korea in 1950. The invasion destroyed his army and required Chinese intervention to fight the US to a draw. He lived to a ripe old age, killing any internal rivals who got in his way. And Kim was a Russian puppet selected for his subservience, not his ability.

Then there’s the case of Saddam Hussein, who started two failed land grabs, against Iran and Kuwait. He survived in office until the US invaded Iraq. And even then, he remained in charge of Baathist/Islamist insurgents until the US pulled him out of his hiding place.

No one handed Putin his job. He clawed his way to power. He knows a thing or two about how to appoint men he can trust with his life to key positions and keep them from conspiring against him individually or in collusion with each other. If he loses and withdraws from Ukraine, he will likely continue to rule Russia until the end of his natural life just like his North Korean counterpart.

Look at Maduro and Gaddafi. They tanked their countries’ economies despite tremendous amounts of oil resources. Gaddafi invaded Chad, lost and took huge losses in men and equipment. It took foreign intervention/invasion to remove one of them. Look at Mugabe. Only personal infirmity in the form of senility removed him from office.

A declaration of a no-fly zone by NATO is a declaration of war with a nuclear power. This is madness.

NATO cannot enforce a no fly zone in Ukraine without killing Russians in the Ukraine and in Russia itself if it hopes to shut down Russian radar defenses and anti-aircraft missiles. If NATO tries this it invites disaster.

I favor a lot of economic sanctions on Russia, it’s various oligarchs including putin, and fully supplying the Ukrainian military. But I don’t support US troops pulling any triggers or pressing any buttons. That is a dangerous red line that should not be crossed.

He's pretty cavalier with the lives of the billions of people who could get nuked.

Of course, it would take the wind out of the sail of the Climate Change crowd. Not much man-made greenhouse gases during a Stone Age.
