Top Russian general is killed by Ukrainian sniper as Kyiv claims 9,000 of Putin’s troops have died during invasion

A top Russian general has been killed amid bitter fighting in Ukraine in what represents a major blow to the Russian invasion.

Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky, who was the deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of Russia's Central Military District, died yesterday as Ukrainian defence forces repelled the Russian offensive.

His death has not yet been officially confirmed by Russia's Ministry of Defence, but was announced on social media by his colleague Sergey Chipilyov and was widely reported by several Russian and Ukrainian news outlets.

A military source confirmed that he was killed 'by a sniper', and suggested a funeral for the Major General - by far the most senior Russian figure to have died in the conflict thus far - will be held in Russia on Saturday.

After days of denial, the Kremlin yesterday admitted that 498 of its troops have been killed and 1,600 injured in the 'special military operation' in Ukraine, but the true figure is almost certainly higher.

Ukraine's armed forces meanwhile claimed today that Russia's army had suffered 9,000 casualties - though the statement recognised that the calculation of the death toll 'is complicated by the high intensity of hostilities'.

Chipilyov, of the Airborne Forces Union of Russian Paratroopers, confirmed Sukhovetsky's death on social media earlier today in perhaps the most definitive proof of the general's passing.

'With great pain, we received the tragic news about the death of our friend, Major-General Andrey Aleksandrovich Sukhovetsky, in Ukraine during a special operation.

'We express our deepest condolences to his family,' the post read.

It was not clear where Sukhovetsky was killed.

The 47-year-old was a highly decorated veteran who was appointed deputy army commander of the 41st division in October 2021.

Prior to that, he commanded the 7th Airborne Assault Division in Novorossiysk for

Note well that Putin is staying away from the battle. He cares little about the troops who are dying to further his imperialism. Putin wants the Ukraine because it has much better agriculture, more researves of rare resourses and other things that would enhance Russia’s income

Equivalent of a Corps commander in the west. He must have been running one of the main axes of the offensive.

“I am surprised there are not many, many roof top Ukranians with scoped Barrett rifles.”

Hell, an old 1903 Springfield .30-06 can reach out and touch someone just fine (granted, though, not to the extent a .50 cal Barrett can). However, I posit that far more people can handle the Springfield better than they can the Barrett, and thus the chances of successful kills is greater, especially if there are more shooters. Just my $.02.

Russian assets are powerful enough to have a crushing effect if used in an unrestricted manner. Are you willing to support US military involvement against Russian forces?

But but but… if you don’t believe every line of propaganda coming out of Ukraine you are a Putin boot licking freedom hating thug.

It’s been totally remarkable to see people who said they didn’t believe a word the media said just a mere few weeks ago now but the most outlandish propaganda as gospel truth.

Major General Andrei Sukhovetsky, the commanding general of the Russian 7th Airborne Division, was killed in fighting in Ukraine earlier this week.

His death was confirmed by a local officers’ organisation in the Krasnodar region in southern Russia. The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear.

Sukhovetsky, who was 47, began his military service as a platoon commander after graduating from a military academy and steadily rose through the ranks to take a series of leadership positions.

He took part in Russia’s military campaign in Syria.

He was also a deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army.

Note well that Putin is staying away from the battle.

He should be leading the battle on a horse or a bear.

Absolutely:

It’s also possible the ‘sniper’ was a Russian assigned to kill a dissenting general.

And the insurgency has begun. Hopefully, the Ukes - if they haven’t already - will soon use IEDs on truck and APC convoys.

His death has been confirmed by the Russians and yet you STILL consider it outlandish propaganda?

Are you willing to support US military involvement against Russian forces?

I think it would be unwise. US military engagement against Russian troops would be the one thing that would most help Putin unite Russian opinion in favor of his war.

There is a growing opposition in Russia to the war based on a growing understanding of the cost in Russian lives, the economic consequences to Russians from economic isolation and the lies Putin told to the Duma and the Russian people about his war aims

Many on these boards have forgotten the Iraq wars and the Afghanistan debacle. All US led invasions.

Remember the months and months of death and mayhem, snipers, roadside bombs.

War is hell. Russia lost thousands in Syria. A half million died in Syria before Trump rolled in.

This thing in Ukraine is a walk in the park compared to that.
