A top Russian general has been killed amid bitter fighting in Ukraine in what represents a major blow to the Russian invasion.
Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky, who was the deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of Russia's Central Military District, died yesterday as Ukrainian defence forces repelled the Russian offensive.
His death has not yet been officially confirmed by Russia's Ministry of Defence, but was announced on social media by his colleague Sergey Chipilyov and was widely reported by several Russian and Ukrainian news outlets.
A military source confirmed that he was killed 'by a sniper', and suggested a funeral for the Major General - by far the most senior Russian figure to have died in the conflict thus far - will be held in Russia on Saturday.
After days of denial, the Kremlin yesterday admitted that 498 of its troops have been killed and 1,600 injured in the 'special military operation' in Ukraine, but the true figure is almost certainly higher.
Ukraine's armed forces meanwhile claimed today that Russia's army had suffered 9,000 casualties - though the statement recognised that the calculation of the death toll 'is complicated by the high intensity of hostilities'.
Chipilyov, of the Airborne Forces Union of Russian Paratroopers, confirmed Sukhovetsky's death on social media earlier today in perhaps the most definitive proof of the general's passing.
'With great pain, we received the tragic news about the death of our friend, Major-General Andrey Aleksandrovich Sukhovetsky, in Ukraine during a special operation.
'We express our deepest condolences to his family,' the post read.
It was not clear where Sukhovetsky was killed.
The 47-year-old was a highly decorated veteran who was appointed deputy army commander of the 41st division in October 2021.
Prior to that, he commanded the 7th Airborne Assault Division in Novorossiysk for

Message for Mr. Putin:
Why don’t you commit suicide?? End it all.
Shh……..
Someone on FR told me there were 7000 dead Russians. I didn’t believe it. But, assumed the 9000 was a continuation from that number.
Kira a Ukrainian parliament member said her goal was to kill 1000 Russians a day.
re the Ukrainian claim of recapture of Bucha:

I have been reading around various military analysts and now I don’t think that’s correct that the Russian 41st Combined Arms Army was in Bucha. That’s probably the 35th CAA in Bucha.
The 41st CAA, in which the dead Russian general was, appears to be around Chernihiv, which itself remains in Ukrainian hands.
Excellent!
Thank you very much. That’s what I call making a solid point.
I actually enjoyed the video of the Ukrainians taking an abandoned Russian tank for ride. They were living it up!
Have a great day.
When high numbers (during a conflict) are given, they are usually broken out as so many dead and so many wounded. On FR reading comprehension is at a premium with posters speed reading, then lumping everything into a convenient sentence or number in their subsequent posts, spreading confusion and sowing arguments.
A high number of Russian dead is possible, if the Uk Army used massive artillery and rocket strikes on some massed target during the opening of the conflict or in the Luhansk/Donabas regions. Strikes like that have a way of disintegrating bodies so counts are very difficult.
Did one or more happen? Who knows?
I did see, a couple weeks ago, at least one air cargo pallet of 50 M2 ammo being delivered. The UKes wouldn’t normally use 50 cal so maybe there were, indeed, a few crates of Barretts in the mix? And you wouldn’t be seeing those roof top guys anyway. That’s not how we do it.
Weird seeing a story like that in Pravda. “No news in Izvestia, no humor in Krokodil, no truth in Pravda.”
They count the toes and divide by ten.
LOL.
LOL.
LOL
i see we have another one who believes in the “ghost of Kiev” and the snake island martyrs.
I don’t believe either side. But I do believe accounts coming in from families of Ukraine friends here in the States.
The long Russian convoy is a long sitting duck.
I think the whole invasion force that was staged was estimated at 270k, and sources say more than 80% of that is in the Ukraine now. So that would be 9,000 killed out of 216,000, which doesn’t seem far fetched.
There is reason to believe this, praying for Ukrainian success
something like this could flip public opinion back in Russia
No way to tell how real this is, but there’s a tweet that claims the defenders at Kiev have made a dent in the column:

Further down the tweet, commenters say it’s questionable - the bridge was destroyed earlier. Mea culpa.
