Ukrainian forces are attacking the 40-mile-long convoy that is attempting to converge on the capital city of Kyiv, the chief of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine said.
“We are striking the enemy’s columns,” Brig. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov told Military Times on Wednesday. “We burn many columns of the enemy.”
“My intelligence officers and agents are directing and calling the strikes,” he said, adding that the forces are using Su-24 and Su-25 fighter jets, artillery, and missile barrages against Russian forces and equipment.
The convoy of Russian troops was roughly 15 miles from Kyiv, a senior defense official told reporters on Monday, and little had changed in that regard on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Russian troops specifically aiming to gain control of Kyiv, which includes the convoy, have been “stalled” as they face more resistance than they anticipated, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters during Wednesday’s briefing.
The defense official on Wednesday noted they had indications that Ukrainian forces are targeting the convoy in an attempt to prevent Kyiv’s falling.

Former Pentagon staff specialist Trent Telenko provided a new possible explanation for the slowed convoy — flat tires. He said in a lengthy social media thread that leaving “military truck tires in one place for months on end” is problematic because “the sidewalls get brittle in the sun and fail like the tires on the Pantsir-SR.”

OK good, but where Russia’s airforce? Its about 50x larger than Ukraine’s. Seems they should be dominating the airspace above this 40 mile convoy.

Some Russians are claiming that the government will close the border within 24-48 hours and urging any Russians who want to leave the country to do so now

Ukraine's navy is gone.
Russia can have 40 mile long convoys out in the open (assuming that news is even true) because it controls the sky, and its army probably has main pockets of what's left of the Ukraine army surrounded in Donbas, Kiev and Muriopol. It doesn't mean resistance is over, but it does mean Ukraine's government is on the mat with one shoulder down.

I’ve been hearing that the convoy was within 17 miles of Kiev for three days. This doesn’t make any sense at all.
The main issue the Russians have is that their convoy is safe in open ground where they can see and destroy any approaching attacks.
The problem is that every time they send a section of it into an urban area it doesn’t come back.
Probably afraid of stinger missles.
That’s exactly what I would’ve done.
Especially at checkpoints, where they can’t move themselves around damaged vehicles.
Just wait until “The Widow Of Kiev” gets started in on those ruskies. Or maybe the “Barrista Of Kiev”…or even the “Parking Meter Maid” of Kiev. I lose track but those ruskies are really asking for it for disrupting the democrats money laundering schemes while ending COVID, they haven’t been this pissed off since the Republicans took their slaves away.

You know how they say the fish rots from the head down? After the end of the Cold War, Russians started being able to travel freely to the West and get a fairly good feel for attitudes in the West about war, land grabs and the way Western governments were constrained by those attitudes. I expect officers up and down the line understood that there was no possibility of a NATO invasion of Russia. So where’s the harm in putting that weapons procurement and maintenance budget towards more productive purposes, like luxury cars, expensive foreign vacations and Ivy League educations for their kids? To the extent Russian equipment is becoming an issue, it might be for the same reasons that Putin has $200b of personal savings - the budget for their acquisition and maintenance been diverted to civilian uses.
