Sympathy for the outnumbered and outgunned defenders of Kyiv has led to the exaggeration of Russian setbacks, misunderstanding of Russian strategy, and even baseless claims from amateur psychoanalysts that Putin has lost his mind.
A more sober analysis shows that Russia may have sought a knockout blow, but always had well-laid plans for follow-on assaults if its initial moves proved insufficient.

I’m inclined to agree. CNN’s Hertling is doing what his employers want - selling a rah-rah narrative - rather than saying what he really thinks. Shame on him. I’m sympathetic to the Ukrainian cause, but some of the optimistic hyperbole is just off-the-wall.
Information that sounds somewhat reasonable and realistic.
Wild!
I read this earlier today. It is a sober message.
There is a lot of hope around the underdog story here. But in the end, Russia—for all their military shortcomings—will prevail.
What they would be excellent for is combine them with Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and use them like the mujahideen in Afghanistan, turn Ukraine into one large guerilla war and make the life of the Russians miserable, perhaps throw in IEDs and see what happens.
He will never be able to hang onto that country. If Russia thought Afghanistan was bad wait until he sees what is in store if he manages to take Ukraine.
Here comes the pivot. Kiev will fall and all the talking heads will be changing the tune
We’ll see. Afghanistan is about as backwards as it gets. Totally different battle plan.
Putin is crazy, but it kind of is failing, because the whole strategy was for it to end before it even began. The fact that Russia didn’t role through in a rout was not good for them.
Is a Pyrrhic victory really a victory?
If Putin manages to take Ukraine at the cost of tens of thousands of dead young Russians who only months ago were drinking beer, dancing in clubs and playing video games
plus large numbers of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians casualties
and destroying beautiful European cities like Kiev and Kharkiv and Odessa
earning the enmity of the world, don’t count out China ultimately distancing itself from Putin
His only allies Venezeuala, Syria, Cuba, Myanmar
Reducing his own people to mere subsistence living in a total police state
But Ukrainians have hated Russians for a long time, not so with Afghanis.
Yep. I want to think otherwise, but GHWB Made the chicken Kiev speech, and Putin Is making Kiev his beeotych, I’m just being real. We need better leadership against the Putin/Xi axis.
Sorry, earlier posy should have said, Putin is NOT crazy.
Hes not taking it, hes cleaning it.
I was against involvement, from a military perspective, of NATO in this conflict. I believe it will be bloody and probably horrific to watch. The only thing that I am certain of, is that Putin will do it all again to the next country.
With that belief, I am not sure that we get a better opportunity to destroy Half their military than we have now. I sincerely doubt the Russians would recover after amputating the armored columns sitting in place in Ukraine. If Russia is going to go nuclear, then it won’t change the stakes with the next county he invades.
Perhaps we should consider the opportunity since the stakes don’t change.
Bill Roggio is definitely not fluent in Newspeak, and the Ministry Of Truth is really upset.
He’s right but we can’t let that get in the way of freeper slugfests can we
The author of this piece, Bill Roggio, did great War reporting from Afghanistan, and has Military experience.
He is very credible in my book, even when just airing his opinions.
Who was in the room with Biden and Putin when the strategy was discussed?
