Arabs decry 'racist' double standard in Ukraine media commentary
France 24 ^

Baghdad (AFP) – Like much of the world, Arabs were stunned by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but shock quickly gave way to indignation over media commentary seen by many as racist against people from the Middle East.

"This isn't a place -- with all due respect, you know -- like Iraq or Afghanistan that has seen conflict raging for decades," said Charlie D'Agata of US network CBS News.

"This is a relatively civilised, relatively European -- I have to choose those words carefully too -- city where you wouldn't expect that or hope it is going to happen."

A day later, after much online furore, D'Agata apologised for his "poor choice of words".

This was just one of many remarks on reputable media outlets drawing a line between the conflict unfolding in Ukraine and those in other parts of the world.

But Arabs were quick to point out the double standard, noting that while the toll of war may be similar in the respective conflicts, the media treatment is not.

Many also drew a comparison between Europe's welcoming of Ukrainian refugees and the influx of Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans, which was declared a "migrant crisis".

Political scientist Ziad Majed said that, while there was "magnificent solidarity" from the world over the Ukraine conflict, it also revealed a "shocking distinction".

The discrepancies in media treatment revealed the "dehumanisation of refugees from the Middle East", said Majed, a professor at the American University of Paris.

"When we hear some commentators speaking about 'people like us', this suggests that those coming from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan or Africa are not (like them)".

Maybe because Muslims killing each other and other peoples is a way of life and will never stop. That may be the difference.

The difference is, the CIA propagandists are working for Ukraine, not any of these Arab countries.

You know, the same propagandists that tried to remove Trump from office twice, and finally succeeded on their third, more aggressive attempt.

Fact is, these so-called “refugees” from Muslim areas are a blight on wherever they go.

Maybe because Ukrainians are closer, culturally, to the rest of Europe than Middle Easterners are.
Is it racist to point that out?

When Russians or Ukrainians play soccer with heads I’ll start comparing them to the Arab world. Till then, you are a backward culture.

I wonder if the world's largest (and almost only) group of "white supremacists" considered it might be because the Ukrainian refugees respect the local culture, are willing to work, and don't rape, among other such distinguishing behaviors.

Unless those refugees go to Muslim countries they will bring with them the usual complaints of unfairness because they can’t discern the great cultural and religious gaps between them and European countries.

Ukrainians are basically Western thinking not Muslim. So of course they will be accepted by European countries.

The difference is that it’s not NATO/America doing the invasion this time. If NATO was bombing Ukraine the news would be about how they were “liberating” the country . Plus Ukraine is a money laundering operation for the west so we have to support them.

I don’t think it’s about race. It’s more ideological and cultural.

Why do these refugees always go to Europe? Egypt, the Gulf State’s, Saudi, the Mahgreb states are all culturally abd religiously linked to Iraq, Syria, and A’stan
In fact Egypt and Syria used to be one nation, The United Arab Republic. And these nations have not experienced war. The last war for Egypt was 60 years ago. Are these refugees not welcome in their fellow muslims’ homeland.

Would Muslims greet with open arms a million people from Europe bursting into their countries and setting up house keeping forever?

At least even the Russians stop killing other people for a few decades at a time. The Middle East has never and will never stop. Sorry, it’s different. (Obviously I hope Russia gets defeated in Ukraine.)
