Switzerland joins EU sanctions on Russia, breaking neutral posture

Switzerland is ditching its deep-rooted tradition of neutrality and adopting the European Union’s sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

The move, which was announced by Swiss President Ignazio Cassis, is significant since Swiss banks include Russian oligarchs close to President Vladimir Putin among their clients.

Switzerland plans to immediately freeze the assets of Putin; his prime minister, Mikhail V. Mishustin; Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov; and 367 other individuals who were personally sanctioned by the EU last week.

“Switzerland reaffirms its solidarity with Ukraine and its people; it will be delivering relief supplies for people who have fled to Poland,” the government said, renewing its offer to mediate in the dispute.

The government said it would not maintain its traditional neutrality in the face of “the unprecedented military attack by Russia on a sovereign European state.”

Switzerland hasn’t been truly neutral in a long time.

They gave up their bank independence almost 10 years ago, when their arm was twisted by US Treasury on reporting and monitoring of all Swiss Banks to the satisfaction of Fed.gov.

The doomsday clock just clicked a few more seconds forward.

People keep posting this as if it's something new. The Swiss have been following EU sanctions for quite some time. They sanctioned Russia over the invasion of Crimea in 2014, and have sanctioned pretty much everyone the EU has sanctioned. Iran, Myanmar, Belarus, etc. Militarily, they remain neutral, as always. That doesn't mean they won't impose sanctions.

Yep. The deal on all these sanctions is either you do business with Iran/Russia or you do business with the USA and EU.

The Swiss bankers make the very rational decision as to which group of customers is more valuable.

Exactly, the Swiss have been slowly caving to the globalists bit by bit. When they sold out the holders of Swiss bank accounts, they put the world on notice that their “neutrality” was an increasingly suspect.

"You don’t know the Swiss."

Then enlighten me.

Switzerland just lost its premier place as a bank haven and they will not get it back anytime soon. Capital will not be parked where it is likely to be taken. Nobody from Russia or China or any citizen of a country not aligned with the EU would even dream of putting their money there now.
