Six American special ops veterans join the fight in Ukraine after Zelensky's appeal to form International Territorial Defense teams

Six American special ops veterans are on the Polish border, ready to enter Ukraine and join the resistance against Putin's army after a call for help from President Zelensky.

The men are joined by three British veterans and a German, all of whom are NATO-trained and ready to assist the Ukrainian territorial defense teams.

They are believed to be among the first to join the newly former International Legion of the Territorial Defense of Ukraine that Zelensky announced on Sunday after a weekend of staving off the enemy.

BuzzFeed News cites an unnamed US Army veteran recruiter who said there are also two former US infantry officers ready to fly to the region to provide leadership for the group.

They will join sixty British volunteers who are also planning to make their way to Ukraine to help the fight.

Sixty British volunteers are heading to Ukraine to fight against Vladimir Putin's Russian forces, led by Mamuka Mamulashvili, Georgian National Legion (pictured training in Kyiv in January) commander

It is unclear if he also recruited the ten NATO troops who are already on the Polish border.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said on Sunday the UK would back Britons if they travelled to join the resistance movement who are bravely repelling the Russian forces.

The White House has not made any such endorsement.

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said he didn't 'want to see British people killed any more than I want to see Ukrainians' and asked people who were not properly trained or an 'experienced member of an armed forced' not to join the war in Ukraine.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine was 'very dangerous', he told Sky News, and there were 'better ways' to support the country.

This operation is in its final phases. I watched some live cam footage of Kharkov a few minutes ago. Looks like mostly street fighting. You can see small explosions in the streets. Buildings are not being targeted.

You are letting the MSM get you all worked up.

Nothing new.

https://warontherocks.com/2021/08/soldiers-of-fortune-why-u-s-mercenaries-should-not-be-legal/

Mercenaries have a long and sortied history. and not always a good history:
“The Americans had been brought to Spain by Comintern, the worldwide Communist organization, but, to disguise their allegiance, the troops had been given an irreproachably non-Communist name: the Abraham Lincoln battalion.”

There are many others....

Does this mean SOF magazine will be back?

This is slowly becoming our circus and our monkeys.
US arms yes, US blood HELL NO.

Not really. Ukraine is receiving a wave of modern arms from Europe including whole squadrons of fighter aircraft from Poland (most likely). Finland just announced a massive shipment, too. Ukraine are not really getting much at all from Brandon. Just promises.

This is awesome.

Everything we do to oppose Russia sends a very strong message of deterrence to China at the same time.

Military service in a foreign country is not an expatriating act if service is as a soldier who is not an officer, unless the foreign military is engaged in hostilities with the United States. Further, foreign military service usually does not cause loss of nationality since an intention to relinquish nationality normally is lacking. In adjudicating loss of nationality cases, the Department has established an administrative presumption that a person serving in the armed forces of a foreign state not engaged in hostilities against the United States does not have the intention to relinquish nationality.

Exactly what I said. Get rid of the need to import oil. Even the tree huggers should support it if they really understood the alternative.

There's a reason the paperwork for such mercenaries is deceptive. You see a paycheck from Burisma Holdings before you see a direct paycheck from the Ukrainian Army.

They'll show up as "support", "trainers", or "advisors" when they're actively directing foreign troops, making them in effect Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) or Officers, both of which ARE expatriating acts.

Well, I think he has a point. Amateurs who don't speak Ukrainian are going to be able to contribute very minimally in a military sense. They'll use up part of the logistically tail, etc.. Probably do as much harm as good.

Former military with combat experience are an entirely different matter, though.

Mercenaries aren’t cheap. Is Ukraine going to pay them, or will the funds come from a NATO nation? It would seem the Ukrainians will have few resources for additional expenses.

Hi.

Given the size discrepancy between the opposing forces, I'd call “Soldier of Fortune,” too.

If there was federal law preventing US citizens from fighting in foreign wars, you would have most of Blackwater Security gone.
____________

Is this the same idea like the French Foreign Legion?

They are retired. they can fight for whoever they want.

Can, yes. Have problems doing so, yes also.

If retired, they can be recalled to U.S. active military service at any time for the rest of their life.

If they take up arms in opposition to the United States, they relinquish their citizenship.

If they serve as an officer or NCO for any country other than the U.S., they can have their citizenship removed.
