As Russians advance on Kyiv, ordinary civilians heed calls to fight for Ukraine however they can
Washington Post ^ | February 25, 2022 | Adam Taylor

As Russian forces advance on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, people all over the country are being urged by officials — and sometimes compelled by necessity — to fight back in whatever ways they can.

The country’s former president is patrolling the city streets with a civilian defense force, armed with an AK-47. Civilians have been called to find their own weapons and make molotov cocktails — a type of crude, homemade explosive named, mockingly, after a former Soviet foreign minister.

Roughly 18,000 weapons have already been distributed in the Kyiv region, according to the government. At the country’s borders, Ukrainian guards have been stopping vehicles, looking for men between the ages of 18 and 60 who can help in the fight.

Somebody want to explain why the media are all suddenly spelling ‘Kiev’ differently than how they always spelled it before?

Thats the opposite of a gun buyback.

Want to defend your country against any larger neighbor?

Give every adult male a rifle, 100 rounds of ammunition, and basic training how to use it.

Bring them back one day a year for a day of practice, updates and a BBQ

I think it the local spelling. When I went to Vienna it was the same thing. Wien, not Vienna.

Common technique used to make themselves sound like they are more knowledgeable (than you the reader) about the whatever. If the spelling doesn't stick, they'll just drop the usage down the memory hole and move on to the next new thing. re. whatever the current spelling is for Peking, Beijing, whatever.

Kiev is the Russian spelling of the Ukranian name for its capital, Kyiv. The two languages are similar, but get along as well as a Bronx accent in Fenway park.

The WaPo and our MSM will be all for arming civilians with military weapons in the Ukraine, even as they will always bitterly oppose it here.

Here in Washington State, the Yakima Indian tribe was always spelled like that, with an “i” in the middle. But about three years ago, I suddenly noticed that news people were spelling it Yakama, replacing the “i” with an “a.” I assume it was some PC decision, to show how hip they are.

The local spelling is in Cyrillic. That is just way too hard to type ;-)

Makes me think of what the citizens in my little slice of heaven could do against an army. A hunter can pick off a deer at 200 yards. A bow hunter can do it silently at 100 yards. There are thousands of us. Look what the Taliban did.

It really depends on the terrain. Guerilla fighters have a hard time of it in the absence of mountains or jungles. Urban areas, too, I suppose.

I don’t give a CRAP about the media’s politically correct/corrupt use of the English language, it will always be PEKING and KIEV to me!

Yeah, well it was spelled KIEV for the last 400 years, so I think I will stick with the original.
