Cracks in foundation led to wind turbine's collapse, 49 others also at risk. ( Canada )

TransAlta Renewables Inc. has to replace foundations of 50 wind turbines at Kent Hills wind farm..

An investigation into what caused the collapse of a wind turbine at New Brunswick's largest wind farm has revealed serious structural issues that affect not only the turbine that fell, but dozens of others in the area as well.

According to TransAlta Renewables Inc., the Alberta-based company that owns and operates the Kent Hills wind farm, the cracks formed because of "deficiencies in the original design of the foundations."

This caused a 100-metre-tall turbine to collapse in the fall of 2021. Now the company plans to replace the foundations of 50 wind turbines in sections 1 and 2 of the wind farm about 55 kilometres southwest of Moncton.

"The root cause failure analysis indicates that deficiencies in the original design of the foundations have caused crack propagation within the foundations and that the foundations must be replaced," TransAlta Renewables said in a news release Wednesday.

The company expects the work to cost between $75 and $100 million.

Wind turbines in the third section of the 167-megawatt wind farm and in other farms owned by TransAlta Renewables are not affected, the release said.

The company said its Kent Hills wind turbines will remain offline until foundations are replaced, a process it expects will take until the end of 2023.

The wind farm operates on Crown land near Prosser Brook. The area, including ATV and snowmobile trails, was closed following the collapse of the wind turbine in the fall.

none of the windmills are more than 13 years old. . The company operates similar facilities in Alberta, Quebec, Ontario, as well as in the U.S. and Australia..

deficiencies in the original design

Well one could say the whole idea of windmills for large scale electric production is deficient.

I found out something a little while back-they cannot just recycle these blades, there is no machinery or use and they cannot cut them up. So they are buried whole.

Check out this article:
Wind Turbine Blades Can’t Be Recycled, So They’re Piling Up in Landfills

Too windy for the wind turbine that operates on wind?

Same goes for solar panels. They cannot be recycled.

I’ve heard (no pun intended) that the larger windmills produce ultra low frequency sounds that although humans can’t hear, it can disrupt our physiology enough that people up to a half mile away experience sleeping disorders. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if that same sound issue eventually affects support foundations over time. Anyone experienced in these foundations that know if the design reviews have checked for this?

Wind is a terrible “carbon-free” energy. Even the article talks about trucks can only transport one blade at a time, and I see trains carrying them all the time. Their construction is also not carbon-free. It takes loads of polluting chemicals to make them and lots of carbon energy too. The construction of each windmill is also a massive energy consumer.

Jimmy Stewart movie No Highway in the Sky. Faulty science in the movie itself but gives a good view of what happens when somebody goes against the establishment.

When you have a wind blowing across the land at a certain speed, and it comes across a wind farm, the wind farm removes energy from the wind. Does the wind exit the wind farm at the same, less, or greater speed than it had when it entered the farm? Less. This does what to the surface temperatures on the far side of the wind farm-lower, no effect, or raise temperatures. That’s right. It raises the temperature. What’s more, it creates a systemic change in the climate of that area for as long as the wind farm exists. This is man-made global warming, with a side of raptor slaughter on the side for good measure. All at the most expensive cost for electricity production known to Folkind.

Jesus wept.
