Just hitting the wires in the last 20 minutes...
Are they still going after bank accounts of the truckers and their supporters?
Possible reasons (other than the implausible official reason, all of a sudden no longer needed) ...
1. Senate debate wasn’t looking good and could have resulted in nullification, Liberals moved to cut off that embarrassment.
2. Banks taking hits on deposits and ratings, pleading behind scenes not to be put in position of policing their clients.
3. Ukraine crisis requires Trudeau and foreign minister to make high-sounding and ironic remarks about human rights and sovereignty.
4. Internal dissent in Liberal Party, their MPs were forced to vote in favor last Monday on penalty of being expelled from caucus (it’s known as a whipped vote), but several are known to be skeptical that the Act was needed.
5. Public opinion more reluctant than Liberals expected even in their strongholds, fear of a shift to NDP who could at any moment withdraw their support (something they should have done on Monday in the vote, which would have killed the Act right there).
Today on political talk shows up here, it’s possible to see NDP talking heads squirming around, now that they got suckered into endorsing something that evidently was not needed. The same could be said of the Liberals but the way politics works here, it’s the NDP that gets to carry the can.
Much of it is on video too. That is why the police didn’t want anyone with iphones, cameras or anything that could get their assault and battery on record!!!
LOL. I forgot about Fonzie, he was much cooler about it.
Sure looks like it. And note that in Commons debate, a number of the yes voters expressed doubt, and hinted they only voted yes to prevent a no confidence knot. No doubt Justine heard from some privately.
Maybe Chrystia Freeland will be forced out as a scapegoat.
That still has not changed the MANDATORY VACCINE REQUIREMENT FOR COMMERCIAL AIR TRAVEL, COMMERCIAL SEA TRAVEL, AND RAIL TRAVEL. It has also not changed the MANDATORY VACCINE REQUIREMENT FOR COMMERCIAL TRUCKING CROSSING INTO CANADA!
In essence, NOT A BLASTED THING HAS CHANGED, regarding the CAUSE of the convoy!
The ONLY THINGS that have changed, is ‘LITTLE POTATO’ has DESTROYED FOREIGN INVESTMENT in PRC (Politically Repressive Canada), obtained a list of ‘ENEMIES’ OF HIS REGIME, ILLEGALLY JAILED THE CONVOY ORGANIZERS INDEFINITELY, and RUINED THEIR LIVELYHOOD!
TRUCK FUDEAU!
If he got a vote of “no confidence” in the past, his government would fall and the Queen could call for a new government. Now this task is delegated by the Queen to her representative in Canada, the Governor General of Canada - currently Mary Simon.
It also requires the assent of the provincial premiers which he clearly wasn’t going to get.
A national emergency doesn’t encompass four square blocks.
All he has to do is win his district. However, I don’t think his Liberal brethren in Parliament will name him Leader anymore. Which hopefully means we won’t be seeing him any more.
Actually, funny thing: The Communist Party of Canada was opposed to the invocation of the Emergency Powers Act...
Important follow-up, the Justice Minister clarified that upon revocation (which is official when the Governor General signs the order in council, probably within a day), the frozen bank accounts are unfrozen, there is no longer a legal pretext for that to continue. So by Friday the people and corporations with frozen bank accounts (information about how many varies depending on sources) should find that their money is then available. I hope they then bank with the Bank of Pete where my policy is no cops in the back room thanks anyway.
Did he get tired of playing Benito Mussolini? Or did someone pound a little sense into his demented head.
I’m starting to believe Trudeau was getting his marching orders from Washington DC on this. They were so afraid of the protests spreading to the US, the practically begged Trudeau to clamp down.
In any case they have what appears to me at least to be a rather squirrely parliamentary setup:
While the Senate is the upper house of parliament and the House of Commons is the lower house, this does not imply the former is more powerful than the latter. It merely entails that its members and officers outrank the members and officers of the Commons in the order of precedence for the purposes of protocol. As a matter of practice and custom, the Commons is the dominant chamber. The prime minister and Cabinet are responsible solely to the House of Commons and remain in office only so long as they retain the confidence of that chamber. Parliament is composed of the two houses together with the "Crown-in-Parliament" (i.e. the monarch, represented by the governor general as ex officio viceroy)......

It is my understanding that the heads of the individual provinces are lifting mandates in Canada.....similar to the way in which powerful governors can lift mandates here in the Unite States.
“I read that the Canadian Senate traditionally was supposed to vote on it, but I didn’t see anywhere that they did.”
That’s the point...he didn’t want them voting on it. He was gonna lose the vote so he rescinded the order. Once he rescinded the order, the debate ended and there will be no vote. If he’d lost the vote, he might very well face a vote of no confidence. Which he may anyway, because he forced every member of the Liberal Party to vote for Naziism, and then he yanked the order a couple days later. I bet a LOT of Liberals and NDP are very, very, very angry at him right now....
” He was going to lose in the Senate, and did not want to risk a vote of no confidence.”
That and the run on the banks. People seem to lose sight of the fact that your money is your PROPERTY!
Once a government starts running their mouths about seizing money, people, even those not involved in the least, lose faith in the sanctity of their bank accounts and will break their necks trying to pull it out as quickly as possible!
Trudeau's National Emergency Act was being scathingly describes as "an Emergency Act looking for an emergency."
