Zelensky: Ukraine wants 'clear' timeframe for NATO membership

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday has asked NATO and the European Union for a firm and "honest" answer on his country's prospects for entry into the alliance at the Munich Security Conference.

During remarks in the afternoon Saturday, the Ukrainian president questioned why the E.U. avoids questions over his country's membership status, asking, "Doesn't Ukraine deserve direct, honest answers?"

Zelensky said "this also applies to NATO. We are told the door is open. But for now, no outsiders are allowed in," he said while addressing world leaders in Munich, Kyiv-based news agency Interfax-Ukraine reported.

He added that if some members of the NATO Alliance don't want to include Ukraine or if "all members of the Alliance do not want to see us [as a member], then they should be honest with the country."

The only people who support this nonsense are the neocons who hate America.

Fight an existential war over a country 7,500 miles away that 95% of Americans cannot find on a map?

And one in which we have no essential interests?

Yeah, go ahead and expose yourselves by supporting this.

Better idea: Disband NATO. Let the Ukraine join the European Union instead.

“Better idea: Disband NATO”

That gets my vote.

Reagan believed that captive nations and people have the right to be free.

Why not have Putin join NATO? Then we’d be one happy family!

Exactly. We screwed the pooch with them years ago. Should have welcomed them as a western nation and they’d be on our side against China. I don’t see any reason to be at odds with them but we keep poking them.

It’s been since 2004 or 2005 by my reckoning..... I guess Ukraine just hasn’t ponied up enough money to the powers that be, yet....

That aside, what STOPS all this Russia, Russia, Russia Xiden scare mongering is for the Ukraine to pull its NATO Aspirancy status and forego membership.

NATO is no longer just the North Atlantic imperative of its origin. It is the tool of a bunch of stupid US neocons willing to spend 4% of our GDP to sell US weapons to NATO and put up with, use NATO to bomb places like Syria and Libya and allow Germany and France to not even meet their signed commitments to pay at least 2% of their GDPs to support it. Screw them, screw NATO. Disband it and let the EU pay for their own EDF an deal with the Bear themselves. Not one more US soldier’s life - not a one.

Disband NATO...Reagan believed captive nations had a right to be free

Well, I am all about disbanding NATO, but the fact that this will be the end of the American occupation of Germany does call for some forethought.

We have not had to deal with "where does the border between Germany and Russia lie" for quite a while.

The Elbe is too far West. Stalingrad is too far East.

The rest is up for grabs.

“Reagan believed that captive nations and people have the right to be free.”

Yep. We spent 50 years living under the specter of destruction from the Soviet Union.

Now some short sighted folk seem to be keen to allow that rival to regain its past power by once again enslaving its neighbors.

Laughter from Kremlin when LBJ launched a war in Vietnam against guerilla fighters still rings in my ears.

Reagan believed that captive nations and people have the right to be free.

Reagan would have been laughed out of office and sent to a nursing home if he made a statement like that while Americans were being forced to wear diapers on their faces and take experimental "vaccines" that don't work.

Reagan never started any wars. Actually when Marine barracks were bombed in Lebanon, he withdrew the troops.

“Reagan believed that captive nations and people have the right to be free.“

As usual, the Gipper was correct. But that falls far short of saying it is the obligation of the American people to enforce those rights everywhere. An obscure country in far Eastern Europe that has only been independent in modern times for the past 30 years is not where I would start, especially where their adversary is the one nation on earth that has the military capacity to complete destroy our own country. It’s time for Americans to put America first.

I don’t remember Reagan trying to expand NATO into Warsaw Pact countries. If the ending of the cold war had gone the other way, and the reverse were happening with the Warsaw Pact expanding westward into Italy, France, the former West Germany, BeNeLux etc., I’n pretty sure that we’d be about as unhappy about that (or even more so) as Putin is with NATO’s eastward expansion.

Maybe it’s time for Germany and the EU to start paying for their own defense. They want a European Defense Force. Why not make them pay for it? Most of them don’t even follow through on their signed goal of committing at least 2% of their GDP to support it. Last time I checked there were only 5 members who do that - U.S., Greece, Poland, Estonia and the U.K.

I say, hang them out to the wind and let the Krauts deal with the Bear...
