Pa. Uber driver’s terrifying last moments as she begs accused killer for her life caught on dash cam

It began as a normal Uber pick-up for the mom of four moonlighting as a driver. That is until the man in the backseat put a gun to her head.

According to police, that man was 22-year-old Calvin Crew, of Penn Hills, Allegheny County, who has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of Uber driver and mom of four, Christina (Christi) Spicuzza.

Crew faces charges of criminal homicide, robbery and tampering with evidence, according to authorities, according to KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, which reports:

The dash cam footage recovered by police shows, 38-year-old Spicuzza begging for her life – ultimately to no avail.

This, after Crew put a gun to Spicuzza’s head about 10 minutes into the ride last Thursday.

Crew told her to “keep driving,” according to the criminal complaint cited by KDKA.

Spicuzza responded by saying, “Come on, I have a family.” Crew replied, “I got a family, too, now drive.”

Spicuzza’s pleading didn’t end there. The dash cam footage shows her saying, “I’m begging you, I have four kids.”

The video ends with Crew saying, “Do what I say and everything will be all right,” KDKA reports, citing the complaint in the case.

But it wasn’t all right. Far from it.

In a press conference this morning, police told the media that it’s unclear what happened from the time Spicuzza’s dash cam was shut off and until her death, but it must have been “terrifying for Christine.”

The body of the mother of four from Turtle Creek, Pa., was found last Saturday afternoon. Spicuzza died of a single gunshot wound, police said without elaborating.

GPS records provided by Uber show the pair drove through several Allegheny County neighborhoods. Along the way, phone records showed that Spicuzza’s cash apps were accessed, KDKA reports.

According to police, robbery was the main motive in the killing. They said there’s no known prior relationship between Crew and Spicuzza.

Spicuzza and Crew then drove to Monroeville, where police say she was shot last Thursday night. Her body was found three days later in a wooded area there.

At last report, Crew, who was taken into custody and locked up at the Allegheny County Jail Thursday night, was still awaiting formal arraignment in the case.

In this case, justice delayed is justice denied.

The females can get huffy in a blink of an eye. No filter on their emotions for many of them.

If he called Uber and passed him up, she would have been a racist. Alive, but still a racist, and who knows what else might have happened with the cancel culture.

Well I wouldn’t say she was too bright either taking a Uber night job. That’s hardly different than picking up hitch hikers.

I feel badly for her four children. What will happen to them?

I would never do Uber passenger. It’s really not worth it. Your vehicle can’t be older than two years, so you have to keep on leasing or buying, and then all the horror stories.

I am in public customer service. I cannot help but note that the great majority of blacks I encounter treat me, a white guy helping them, with a not-so-subtle surliness and aloofness, that is inappropriate to show to a person that is physically helping they and their family members. Few tip. But ‘some’ are wonderful, sweet, normal, respectful people. Why can’t we all just get along and be kind to one another? Ain’t happening

AirBnB and Uber used to require that hosts, guests, drivers, and riders, all post their photos, bios, and reviews. This was partially so people could decide if they want that person staying in their home, or riding in their car.

Then a few years ago, AirBnB was accused of fostering racism, because whites and Asians declined renting to blacks. This issue became prominent during the Summer of Floyd.

So AirBnB changed its rules in 2018. Now renters can't see the photos of guests until after booking them.

I'm not sure how it is with Uber, but the same accusations of racism have been charged against them.

Yet these are not hotels or car services. They're more like dating services, bringing private individuals together, to see if they're a match and want to do business. Removing photos changes the whole dynamics, because some people give the wrong vibes. You don't want, and shouldn't have to, do business with them.

I used to drive a hack in NYC in my college days in the late 60’s early 70’s. Was robbed once at knife and gunpoint by a man and woman couple. Luckily they just wanted my cash from the night and my vehicle, let me out in Brooklyn. It easily could have turned out otherwise. We used to take fares up to Harlem but turned on our “Off Duty” lamps on the way back to midtown Manhattan. You didn’t want to pick up anything in Harlem at midnight or when the bars closed at 3 a.m. That was around the time when owner-drivers started hacking with German Shepherds sitting in the front seat of their cabs and we got bullet proof partitions. You bet we were racists. If you weren’t, you died.

I have a family member who has been over a year now working in a Major Hospital. His job is basically trouble shooting between Dr.s Staff and Patients @ family members etc.

He never thought one way or another regarding the black population. He views it much differently now as he’s had to deal with the race cards and unreasonable hot tempers etc. over the slightest things.

I do believe they often watch for an “opportunity” of racism in their view regardless if there is one or not they will see it.

"I would never do Uber passenger. It’s really not worth it."

A buddy of mine has a friend that is an Uber driver. He told me his neighbor came home one night with four bullet holes in the car. Apparently he picked up a passenger that had some enemies.

I wouldn’t call that being racist....I’d call that understanding their culture “norms” and behaviors.

Heck I took a cab in Philadelphia from the train station to the Omni Hotel one time. Never used a cab before. You can bet I got plenty nervous when the driver left the city and began driving on the thruway. So I spoke up and asked why we left the city. He said this was faster and a shortcut. Thank God he got off at the next exit!

I often wondered about that as the cab I took back to the train station went thru the city and there wasn’t a time difference. Never took a cab again!
