Some gun permit holders would become 'law enforcement' in state's bill

Legislation introduced in the Tennessee state legislature this month is raising alarms from the state's police union and gun control advocates who say it could turn the streets into the "old West."

Two bills in the state assembly and state senate, HB 254 and SB 2523, would amend Tennessee law and designate "a person who has been issued an enhanced handgun carry permit" as a member of law enforcement.

MORE: America has a gun violence problem. What do we do about it? "As introduced, expands the definition of 'law enforcement officer' to include a person who has been issued an enhanced handgun carry permit; provided, that the permit is not suspended, revoked, or expired, for purposes of authority to carry a firearm under certain circumstances," the summary for the bill reads on the Tennessee General Assembly website.

So if I live in Tennessee, I can have criminals and Americans shoot out at my new OK Corral?

Of course, the Wild West was pretty tame. If Gunsmoke was real life, it would be boring...

# I think the average CCW holder practices more and probably
shoots better than most officers.

Yup. I’ve left a range before because of the unsafe habits of some ‘law enforcement officers’ who showed up.

True.

What infuriates some LEOs is when I tell them the only difference between them and me is that they can issue traffic citations and conduct misdemeanor investigations/arrests.

I love correcting them when they say "civilians" (unarmed combatants in war zone) and tell them to say "citizen". A BIG difference.

That would make our entire state part of law enforcement which I suppose we are with constitutional carry 🤪

20 years ago I used to go a range just outside the big city i lived in and play around with my 300 WM and the cops with their fancy rifles would freak out when they saw my targets compared to theirs.

Fast forward to several years ago when I finally got my LTC and instructor about shit himself over the pistol i brought but then really freaked when he realized I was point shooting and never looking at sights and scored perfect.

Years of practice—probably far more than 99% of law enforcement does, it’s not magic.

Here in the state of Washington you can even make a citizen’s arrest for a misdemeanor if you witness it. (Probably why you said “investigations”)

Tennessee has Constitutional Carry. Even so, there are many places you are not allowed to carry. This bill would allow permit holder to carry everywhere that off-duty police are allowed to carry, such as in parks and businesses where they are currently prohibited to non-police. They still could not carry in schools or courthouses.

This bill does not draft people into the police or force them to act as police, but simply expands where you can legally carry to include all of those places where off-duty police get to carry.
