House Bill 2764 (HB2764), sponsored by Representative Dave Wright (R-Corryton-District 19) and Senate Bill 2616 (SB2616), sponsored by Senator Frank Niceley (R-Strawberry Plains – District 8), as introduced, would prohibit a person from being nominated as a candidate for United States senator or member of the United States house of representatives unless the person has voted in the three previous elections in this state (Tennessee). – Amends TCA Title 2.

Should this bill pass into law, it would stymie the campaigns of Republican congressional candidates Robby Starbuck and Morgan Ortagus for the District 5 U.S. Representative seat currently held by Democrat Jim Cooper, who announced he will not seek re-election after Tennessee’s redistricting plans were finalized.

We need a new party. Most of it is rino/democrat.

This is not an unreasonable requirement in establishing a residency for 3 years. Given the fact that it’s not unusual for a candidate to get a very low percent and win because we have no runoffs (which has resulted in many many RINOs getting in, as they divide the Conservative vote), this can at least weed out people who decided to move in last week, and jump into the fray with no previous participation in local politics.

Stick with Trump. He’s not perfect but who would you rather be in charge of the party, Trump or Mitch?

Not sure this will pass muster in the courts.

It won’t.

USSC governs residency requirements and strictly limits them. They consider 30 days ample time.

I do support President Trump. But when he endorses a bad candidate, I don’t blindly go along. This was a bad endorsement in TN-5.

I agree. But I don’t have influence on the Supreme Court.

I smell a Rino

Especially since The House doesn't even require you to be a resident of the district you run for. You can just rent a space and declare that your home and be fine. Fact is most Senators haven't even been to the state they represent in years.

This is simply an attempt to block Trump and what republican voters want.

Your tax dollars at work. All part of Mitch and McCarthy's plan to shut out Trump.

McCarthy and Graham are in this up to their eyeballs, the biggest problem Trump had in his administration was RINOS giving him advice on the people who he put into his administration instead of following his gut!

So stupid. You don’t need a new state law. Simply have conditions and requirements for the people you want into your party.

I read through the comments. Quite a few…..states can’t control federal elections. This will be struck down in federal court.

What do any of you want? Do you want the federal government to control elections or the state? If so, then you should be very supportive of CornPops attempt at federalizing the entire election process.

I thought states weren’t allowed to add eligibility requirements for federal office beyond what is set forth in the constitution? Isn’t that why term limits were struck down?

Ortagus is the RINO train wreck in this scenario. I still do not understand how such an establishment RINO got Trump’s endorsement.

Good point, and it looks like there are six declared candidates for the Republican primary: Natisha Brooks, Baxter Lee, Quincy McKnight, Morgan Ortagus, Robby Starbuck, and Kurt Winstead. Are any of those people a better choice?

This race is getting national attention partly because Starbuck is in the race, and is a well-known Trump supporter, plus it’s an opportunity to flip a seat from D to R. Do you think any of the more local candidates are up to the task?

McKnight is out, he’s running for Mayor of Nashville instead. Two candidates I’m waiting for are either drafting Prof. Carol Swain or for Maury County Mayor Andy Ogles, a near-perfect Conservative.

I was wary of Starbuck (real last name Newsom) since he appeared on the scene. Screamed carpetbagger opportunist using the folks’ money to try to buy office. I don’t trust him.
