The families of nine victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting have agreed to a $73 million settlement against the maker of the rifle used to kill 20 first-graders and six educators in 2012, according to a court filing.
The families and a survivor of the shooting sued Remington in 2015, saying the company should have never sold such a dangerous weapon to the public. They said their focus was on preventing future mass shootings.
Although the settlement is unlikely to open the floodgates for some settlements given that the lawsuit focused on how Remington marketed the rifle, it could change the way certain guns are marketed and the relationship between gun manufacturers and their insurers.
In one of Remington's ads, it features the rifle against a plain backdrop and the phrase: 'Consider Your Man Card Reissued.' Remington had argued there was no evidence to establish that its marketing had anything to do with the shooting.
The company also had said the lawsuit should have been dismissed because of a federal law that gives broad immunity to the gun industry. But the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled Remington could be sued under state law over how it marketed the rife. The gun maker appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which declined to hear the case.

I hate it when businesses fold like this. Then again, it's their money.
they’ll be sorry...
NRA too busy counting their loot to care.
Pathetic. It sets a precedent for future BS law suits. Sissies folded. Never fold or apologize to the left. They’re like rabid Shiatzus that have a hold of your pants. They will NOT let go.
Start the lawsuits against movie producers and theaters for showing guns and knives being used in violent criminal scenes. They had no business showing that to dangerous felons.
Why not the bullet manufacturer? All the gun did was to shove them out of the barrel; gun worked just fine mechanically and so did the ammo. Sue Federal or whomever made the ammo instead.
Protecting the children...I guess you have to tell yourself something. Even if it is patently ridiculous.
Guns don’t kill people, vaccines do
How about car manufacturer?
What a bunch of BS. My deer rifle is just as dangerous.
A little more injustice...just what we need.
yeah, it’s for da chilrens... that’s it
Based on this type of ruling, Dodge and GM better be careful about advertising their vehicles.
Thank our useless Supreme Court for this crap.
Using their children’s deaths to cash in on a frivolous lawsuit.
That was a really dumb move by Remington to refer to the killer of the kids in their advertising. It’s no wonder they are bankrupt 🤪
Nine families? 75 Million?
What planet did this take place on?
It sure doesn’t make sense on ours.
This settlement just means that Remington's creditors and former owners are cutting the best deal they can.
Now a precedent has been set. Expect more of the same. A LOT more.
Wonder if Remington ever settled with the families of those slain by Charles Whitman in 1966. He used a Remington 700 bolt action rifle as his main rifle and killed plenty.
“I hate it when businesses fold like this. Then again, it’s their money.”
Remington probably had no say in it: Remington’s insurers make the call, as it is their money.
