Former New York Times editorial page editor James Bennet took the witness stand in the trial for Sarah Palin's lawsuit against the paper, telling the court he thought he had apologized to Palin for an editorial that erroneously linked her to the deadly 2011 shooting that injured former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
"Did you ever apologize to Governor Palin?" her attorney, Shane Vogt asked Bennet.
"My hope is that as a consequence of this process now I have," Bennet said.
Palin sued the Times and Bennet for falsely linking a map that her political action committee put out to the 2011 shooting in Tucson, Arizona, that left six dead and Giffords injured. The Times wrote that the map put crosshairs over Giffords and other democratic lawmakers, when in reality, the map put crosshairs over their districts. The Times said it issued a correction "quickly" after the piece was published......
Bennet testified that he felt his statement to CNN was a sufficient apology to Palin at the time.
"I tried that day, I thought I had apologized to her. I went home that night thinking I did a pretty (good) apology to her," Bennet testified.

"Vogt asked if he ever apologized to Palin for the mistake. Bennet noted that he initially did in a statement meant for CNN reporter Oliver Darcy, but that Rhoades Ha edited it out because the Times had "a policy of not apologizing for corrections" in stories."
Amazing that CNN did not mention about the policy on NYT not apologizing.
Also if you follow the links in CNN it shows the supposed NYT apology: "In a tweet, the Times further added, "We're sorry about this and we appreciate that our readers called us on the mistake."
The apology is to the readers, not Palin.
Front page slander and back page apology.
I hope they pay through the nose.
Dems ruthlessly go after repubs but since he thought he had apologized to Sarah it is all OK? I say sue him.
Apologies do not let you off the hook for libel.
Typical “I’m sorry you were offended.”
Not the proper, “sorry I did something to offend you” mea culpa
Nope.
The proper apology is “Please forgive me for my offensive speech and behavior, which I deeply regret.” Delivered on ones knees.
I know what you’re going to say, it’s not enough but worms gotta start somewhere.
Go Sarah, drill baby drill !
“Bennet testified that he felt his statement to CNN was a sufficient apology to Palin at the time.”
That incredibly stupid admission is probably with $10 million to Palin.
A well-stated public correction and apology though may reduce libel damages enough to make a lawsuit pointless. Traditionally, that was a major reason why newspapers published corrections and apologies.
Let’s hope so.
Thanks for helping to keeps CNN on the air. Every click to the CNN website — whether you like or hate CNN — puts money in CNN’s bank account.
So Sarah is suing NYT for libel. I believe that is mainly what this case is about. Why now, some 12 years after the remarks were published? Does it take this long for such a case to come to trial?
Because the NYT republished the defamatory words. Each new republication restarts the statute of limitations.

Oh, I never knew that. Thanks for explaining. Maybe this time they will learn their lesson that compulsively lying about conservatives is not OK.
