Hubble Telescope Captures Incredible Image Of Two Interacting Galaxies; ESA Calls It Rare

The Hubble Telescope snapped the object named Arp 282, which is an interacting galaxy pair composed of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 169 & the galaxy IC 1559. In ESA's own words, this incredible three-dimensional-looking picture by Hubble shows two galaxies interacting with each other as if engaging in a 'cosmic draw'. The interaction captured by the telescope is considered significant as astronomers believe that the interaction of galaxies with one another is an important aspect of their evolution. According to ESA, the object seen in the picture is named Arp 282, which is an interacting galaxy pair composed of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 169, seen at the bottom, and the galaxy IC 1559 at the top. Both the individual galaxies are said to have monumentally energetic cores, known as active galactic nuclei (AGN), although they are not visible in the picture.

In the lower left of the larger galaxy, you can see where the small galaxy sliced through the outer ring of smoke, and dragged it along over the larger galaxy.

470 billion miles is not very much in astronomical terms—one light-year is about 6 trillion miles. The far side of the large galaxy is probably tens of thousands of light-years further away than the closer side.

I captured this image of M51 Galaxy/NGC 5195 earlier this year. This galaxy also has interaction with another smaller companion galaxy, NGC 5195 near top of image and outer most galactic arm, connected to its larger neighbor by a tidal bridge of dust.

M51 Galaxy, is located about 23 million light years away from earth. M51 estimated diameter is about 76,000 light-years. It is believed a large black hole resides at the galaxy core.
