In the lower left of the larger galaxy, you can see where the small galaxy sliced through the outer ring of smoke, and dragged it along over the larger galaxy.

Who's overseeing this to make sure all goes well?
(ahem)There could be hundreds, even thousands of habitable worlds involved in these collisions.

“Interacting.” Nice word for a galactic mass extinction event.

I captured this image of M51 Galaxy/NGC 5195 earlier this year. This galaxy also has interaction with another smaller companion galaxy, NGC 5195 near top of image and outer most galactic arm, connected to its larger neighbor by a tidal bridge of dust.
M51 Galaxy, is located about 23 million light years away from earth. M51 estimated diameter is about 76,000 light-years. It is believed a large black hole resides at the galaxy core.
""The Whirlpool Galaxy’s companion, NGC 5195, is believed to have passed through M51’s main disk some 500 to 600 million years ago, which resulted in the larger galaxy developing a highly pronounced spiral structure. The smaller galaxy likely came from behind, passed through the larger galaxy and then crossed the disk again about 50 to 100 million years ago. Now, NGC 5195 appears to be slightly behind the Whirlpool Galaxy from our point of view.""

“ESA Calls It Rare”
In the history of the universe? How the Phoook would they know?
Is it as rare as breakthrough ChiComWuHu, or a different kind of rare?

It is imagery such as this which gives me pause as to the accuracy of the formulae for arriving at the number of Earth-like planets in the universe.
I have always believed that the number is exponentially high, and that Earth is exceedingly rare.
The reasons ought to be patently obvious but, then again, even some FReepers believe a journey and habitation of Mars is survivable today.
