WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday endorsed Republican colleague Lisa Murkowski for reelection, crossing party lines to back the incumbent from Alaska who faces a primary challenger supported by former President Donald Trump.
The conservative West Virginia lawmaker said he has teamed well with Murkowski in the 50-50 Senate to build bipartisan support for legislation such as President Joe Biden’s infrastructure law. He said Alaska and the Senate are well-served with her in office.
“It’s hypocritical to basically work with a person day in and day out and then, when they’re in cycle, you’re supposed to be against them because they have an R or D by their name,” said Manchin, who appeared with Murkowski on CNN’s “State of the Union” to promote the values of bipartisanship.
It isn’t the first time that Manchin has bucked his party’s political operation. In 2020, he endorsed Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in her reelection bid. Manchin had indicated last April that he would support Murkowski if she chose to run again this year.

Not exactly, Murkowski is practically a democrat.
Just what line did he cross???
That’s all you need to know about murkowski. But I suspect the goal here is to get dems to vote for her.
Good reason to more strongly oppose her (not that anyone needs more reason. She’s a known quantity.)
Big deal
< delusional>”He’d be great as a republican.” </ delusional>
Murkowsky, like every other Bush League Republican, is a valuable Assistant Democrat.
You stroke me, I’ll stroke you.
Birds of a feather..., Swamp Buzzard, that is.
I live in Alaska, and in real life, I actually know Murkowski as an acquaintance. She’s a clever politician. Her write-in campaign to remain senator was a stroke of genius.
Folks need to remember when Alaska obtained statehood we were a predominantly Democrat state. That has changed over the years, but there is still a strong constituency of Democrat voters. Murkowski, Rep. Don Young, former Sen. Ted Stevens, and former Gov. Palin all understood this and balanced their approaches to the voters to present a kind of hybrid of social conservativism and leftist government policy up here. For instance, one year Palin gave all of the residents of the state extra money for heating fuel. In another instance, both Young and Murkowski today posted statements saying that the Republican National Committee’s statements about persecution of the Jan. 6 rioters were too extreme.
It’s also good to remember about 17 percent (?) of our population is Alaska Native, who were very dependent on government money. Murkowski and the rest understand this and depend on that relationship to obtain votes. Add those voters to the small core of urban leftists in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau, plus that (R) next to the name, and you’re over the top and elected to office.
Murky and Manchin are two sides of the same coin, using the government money to buy support while occasionally standing apart from their respective parties. It’s good to be the kingmaker. And no matter what you think of these two, they are genuinely devoted to the state, even if its kind of Fabian socialist - government largesse approach. No wonder they share sympathies.
Like Carlin said, it’s a big club, and you’re not in it.
Maybe we can just let the Russians have it back.
(I keed!)
That’s nice that he and Pelosi can agree on some things
The Russians have made no secret of their desire to seize Alaska. I’d like to win the lottery.
My dream is more likely than theirs.
Alaska, what is wrong with you people???
How and the F can you vote for this piece of schiff???!!!
That makes sense.
Anyone who wasn’t paying attention and wanted to see manchin join the GOP ought to take careful notice now. In DC, it’s about incumbents guarding their turf and covering for one another, despite what role t hey may play in the ongoing theater of politics. In reality, he wouldn’t rise to the despicable level of a RINO were he to switch. And take note that he gladly accepted the bribe of giving his wife a sinecure in the biden mob, which job she still holds.
