White House says 165,000 vehicles that would replace aging fleet are too gas guzzling.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the White House Council on Environmental Quality sent letters to the Postal Service on Wednesday urging the agency to reconsider its plans to buy mostly gas-powered vehicles, according to the Washington Post.
The Postal Service has long put off replacing the deteriorating fleet, which has been in use for over 30 years. The current vehicles don't have air conditioning or air bags, and overuse has led to a slew of vehicle fires.
The agency, drowning in $206.4 billion in debt, has said it cannot afford to electrify its vehicles any more than 10%.
Biden officials are frustrated that the new vehicles would only get 0.4 miles to the gallon, leading to just an 18 percent drop in fuel consumption compared to the current model.
The new gas-powered trucks would be air-conditioned, but with the AC running they would average just 8.6 miles to the gallon.
But the Postal Service said that Oshkosh's electric vehicles could only travel up to 70 miles per charge.

That truck is ugly and that high tech stuff is probably not necessary.
p.s. I think it’s supposed to be 0.4 mpg less than the previous model.

Agree. Another boondoggle. Electric will be worse. Need to add chargers to every PO.
A small diesel from the pre 2007 emission era would be the perfect solution that will never happen.
Designed by Marvin the depressed android.
Electric mail trucks.
What could go wrong ?
I’m not an electric car fan, but for short distance delivery on a well defined daily cycle, electric would probably be a good solution.
Brandon has found another way to damage this country. It will never end.

My first thought too. If they’re going to make it that ugly, they might as well cancel it.
Biden isn’t doing it, he’s clueless. The Red Diaper Babies in his Admin are doing it.
The union wants it build in Wisconsin, this is just bidungs shake down
Depends on how much use they are planning to get out of it. It wouldn’t work for rural routes. But it may work for urban routes. 10 hours a day on a single charge.
Ain’t. That. The. Truth.
Go back to pony express Joe ... oh wait ... I forgot about horse farts.
I bet you could pick up an old one at auction cheap, but that ‘no A/C’ thing is a deal-breaker for me.
You can bet it won’t last long either. Government employees are very abusive of equipment.
A zillion things wrong with using electric vehicles. one would be no mail during a power outage. Remember when the power was out long term in Texas last winter?
Stupid dumf*ck Climate Cretin Cult.
