The White House has reportedly floated an offer to Russian President Vladimir Putin to allow Kremlin access to key NATO bases in exchange for Moscow de-escalating tensions over its military buildup on Ukraine’s border.
The proposal would also involve discussions about Russia verifying that the US has not deployed Tomahawk cruise missiles to bases in Romania and Poland, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday.
The reported offer would be contingent on agreement from US allies, including Romania and Poland, while Russia would also have to provide similar information about bases with ground-launched weapon systems.
The overture reportedly is intended to ease Putin’s fears that the US could target Russia with the missiles.

‘Accommodation’
I dropped an ‘m’ somehow. Caffeine levels not optimal yet.
You get it wrong. It is about intermediate-range missiles. When Russia is going to have them in Cuba and Venezuela and if the deal is accepted then it is reasonable to demand Russia to grant access to the American inspectors.
I generally think all of the above is a bad idea. There shouldn’t be American missiles in East Europe or Russian missiles in Americas.
Somehow, I doubt our Polish and other NATO treaty partners of the former Warsaw Pact will be happy with this. Also very much doubt they heard about it before Joe let it drool from his lips. This administration is well on the way to getting a lot of people killed.
Wouldn’t that be nice.
Idiotic because none of this was about Russia fearing any attack.
His main squeeze is the much younger (now 37) Olympic gymnast, Alina Kabaeva. Reportedly, they have four children together.
It’s good to be the Russian President.
Wait I thought Russia and Putin are evil and Trump was Putin’s c$$$ holster so it can’t be that we retract NATO for Putin, the Anti Trump Biden would never....
Democrats are the most vile destructive pos on earth.
Meanwhile, China still enjoys “most favored nation” status. Only bribes can explain that. Obviously Putin is a tightwad.
Never underestimate how much Biden can f**k thins up.
B. Obama
I doubt Biden had much at all to do with this policy proposal. It smells of Ivy Leaguers from Foggy Bottom... It’s designed to make it look like the administration was ‘willing to go halfway.’ They’ll need that cover when the excrement hits the fan.
Putin, doing his part to stop the population decline in Russia.
Don’t think that hasn’t crossed their mind.
Me too, Jim. I was certain this was coming from the Bee.
“Here is a thought: How about we adhere to the agreements we made and not keep moving our missiles closer to the Russian frontier.”
Here’s a thought: How about Russia respect their neighbors borders and withdraw from Ukraine inclusive of Crimea and Donbass, withdraw from the lands they stole from Georgia, and while we’re at it they can give the Kurile Islands back to Japan.
NATO does not want to put missiles on Russia’s borders and so long as Russia stays within Russia’s borders then there’s no need to aim missile at Russia.
In any case there will not be a return to Russia dominating the nations of Eastern Europe. That crap is over.
It’s the old adage that if you don’t start nothin’ then nothin’s gonna happen.
This is offering Russia something it already has.
Their spies already know what’s on those bases.
What a lame, unserious offer this was.
“Today’s Russia is not the monolithic threat it was when it was the USSR.”
The problem is that Putin wants Russia to be the monolithic force that was the USSR. He also wants Russia to resume being a parasite on Eastern Europe.
Ain’t happening.
“What a lame, unserious offer this was.”
A lame response is the proper answer to lame demands.
Here’s a thought, how about we tell our neocons to drop dead, we take a step back and we stop constantly poking a stick in Putin’s eye. How about we let Putin go about his business and we go about ours, which include worrying about our real strategic threat, China.
Putin would do a much better job of governing California. I say, give him a chance.
