Paris (AFP) – Coral reefs that anchor a quarter of marine wildlife and the livelihoods of more than half-a-billion people will most likely be wiped out even if global warming is capped within Paris climate goals, researchers said Tuesday.
An average increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels would see more than 99 percent of the world's coral reefs unable to recover from ever more frequent marine heat waves, they reported in the journal PLOS Climate.
At two degrees of warming, mortality will be 100 percent according to the study, which used a new generation of climate models with an unprecedented resolution of one square kilometre.
In 2018, the IPCC predicted that 70 to 90 percent of corals would be lost at the 1.5C threshold, and 99 percent if temperatures rose another half-a-degree.
The new findings suggest those grim forecasts were in fact unduly optimistic.

“Researchers” Is there anything they can’t do?
Australia Maritime says the GBR is in great shape, never better in fact. I think I will take their word over a couple of frenchmen’s opinion.
won’t coral colonies just slowly resettle into adjacent but slightly colder waters?
Why bother? At the rate china is draining the oceans of fish to feed their people there won’t be a fish left shortly.
Good, one less thing to worry about.
What a poorly written article. light on details, except they managed to fabricate some 27 trillion number out of thin air. So basically no data, no science just more hype and scare tactics. useless.
Most likely = DOOMED.
Got it!
Who was it that predicted 30 years ago, that we had only 12 years left to control global warming, before sea levels would rise to drown coastal cities?
Suppose we had global warming...the seas rise, etc. Then we’d all adjust. The corals would grow somewhere else, or one species would die, and another take their place.
Remember the spotted owl? We “saved” them at the expense of an entire industry. Then they wiped out a different species of owl. Now if we hadn’t “saved” them, the economy would be better-off and a different species of owl would have taken their place. We need The Prime Directive for messing with nature. And, by-the-way WE are part of nature.
“won’t coral colonies just slowly resettle into adjacent but slightly colder waters?”
Easy now!
Logic and reason have NO PLACE in scientific discussions!

These idiots are nothing but Climate Change hustlers. Their job is propaganda, manipulated climate models/statistics and to foment ‘Chicken Little’ alarmist and fear mongering ‘End of the World’ predictions by using misinformation and passionate speeches that make unsubstantiated claims. Claims that if we don’t act now... the world will become inhabitable and our coastlines will be consumed by the melting polar ice caps with dead polar bears raining from the skies in 10 years.
Basically Al Gore 2.0
These environmentalist are in denial of reality and live in a psychosis of self-delusion and hypocrisy.
Sea levels have risen and fallen, cooled and warmed for millennia through multiple ice ages and warming periods. Somehow corals have survived for over 500 million years. I think this is much to do about nothing.
How did corals do during the last several ice ages?
Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah.
I think they just found a huge colony of corral where they didn’t expect it.
Ummm, what is the mass of the atmosphere versus the mass of the ocean? What is the specific heat of water versus the specific heat of air. How much energy must be added to air to raise it one degree versus how much must be added to water to raise it one degree? Does energy added to the atmosphere raise the air temperature uniformly over the globe or does it increase more or less over the poles versus the tropics where the corals are and why and by how much? Does the air heat the water or does the water heat the air? Is the heat that is delivered to melt arctic ice delivered by ocean currents or atmospheric? In either case is its source sunlight reflected as long wave radiation from the ground above the arctic circle then reflected back off of molecules in the zero humidity arctic sky or is it transported in either ocean and/or atmospheric currents originating closer to the equator? What is latent heat? heat of vaporization? Does the earth transport heat from the equator to the poles and then radiate it to space more efficiently or less efficiently if there is more or less ice? Is the temperature of the earth directly proportional to the log of the CO2 concentration or is it more complicated than that? Can coral only survive within a few fractions of a degree?
Since the world is going bring I guess we might as well just start shooting all the people with colored hair. /sarc
