New COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have plateaued or dropped in all communities served by UPMC, which has more than 30 hospitals across Pennsylvania.
But it’s no time to give in to pandemic fatigue, a prominent UPMC doctor said Monday.
“We may be finished with the pandemic because of our fatigue about it. But the pandemic is not finished with us,” said Dr. Donald Yealy, the chief medical officer for UPMC.
Yealy also cited “reason for optimism,” given that while the ultra-contagious omicron variant spread quickly, it is dropping off quickly, a pattern it has shown in other parts of the world.
But while doctors further believe omicron causes less severe illness for most people, it’s capable of causing severe illness in some, especially the unvaccinated, Yealy stressed.
“Don’t let someone else’s mild experience with omicron give you a false sense of security if you are not vaccinated. This virus can and often does cause severe illness in people who are not vaccinated,” he said.
Yealy said people under 60 who are unvaccinated are nine times more likely to be hospitalized and 14 times more likely to die. He further said more than 75% of COVID-19 patients hospitalized within UPMC are less than fully vaccinated.
He was among several Pittsburgh-based UPMC officials who spoke during an online news briefing on Monday on the pandemic.
Yealy, who strongly urged people to get fully vaccinated and boosted, was asked about recent state data showing vaccinated people are accounting for about 30% of new infections.
He said “vaccinations are there to make sure that your body is best prepared if you come into contact with a virus or develop infection.”
While the purpose isn’t to prevent infections, according to Yealy, it’s possible that over time more vaccinations will lead to “leas and less virus activity” and a resulting drop in the infection rate.
ALL the eggs in the vaccine basket.

FReepmail me to be added to the list.
Two weeks to flatten the curve.
Oh go to Hell.
“Omicron can still cause severe illness in vulnerable, esp. The Unvaxed.”
Shut up. This insanity over a minor disease is ridiculous.
I had the disease just before vaxes started coming out. That was likely alpha or beta, whatever. It wasn’t the worst thing in the world. Just like any other acute illness. Maybe longer for me.
There is no pandemic.
Yes, I am one of the fatigued, but not so fatigued that I will stop fighting the tyranny.
I will no longer allow any of my songs on television until or unless they stop the spread of covid misinformation.
If you get vaxxed, you will not get Covid!
Two years to flatten the curve
“Yealy said people under 60 who are unvaccinated are nine times more likely to be hospitalized and 14 times more likely to die. He further said more than 75% of COVID-19 patients hospitalized within UPMC are less than fully vaccinated.”
What about those over 72, with 6-7 co-morbidities?
The scamdemic must last until November or it is the end of communist democracy!
You were lucky. Close to 900k deaths and still going. More deaths now under Omicron than Delta.
Tell conservative radio host family Phil Valentine or Doug Kuzma that it is minor.
Tell our construction guy in his mid 50’s and perfect health it is minor. He has covid lung and will no longer be able to work
He carried in a oxygen machine when he and his wife brought their dogs in to my wifes practice a few weeks back.
I bet there are plenty of posters here who lost loved ones and will not say it was minor.
Your comments make conservatives look like fools when the vast majority of the population knows it is serious and not a joke.
Give the patients Ivermectin and HCQ, or shove your dire warnings up your ____, Doc!
“If you get vaxxed, you will not get Covid!”
Truck Fudeau!
You are the one looking like a fool. Constantly running your hysterical mouth on any Chyna virus thread. Put a cork in it!
If you click your heels together three times, the pandemic will return...
Sorry, complete BS from someone who does not deserve to practice medicine.
