BERLIN (AP) – Two police officers were shot dead while on a routine patrol in western Germany early Monday, police said.
The shooting happened during a traffic check near Kusel at about 4:20 a.m., police in Kaiserslautern said in a statement.
The officers – a 24-year-old woman and 29-year-old man – were able to radio for help but reinforcements were unable to help them when they arrived.
The perpetrators fled but police had no description of them, the car they used or what direction they fled in.
Police called on drivers in the Kusel area not to pick up hitchhikers and warned that at least one suspect is armed.

Seriously, with the Cold War back from vacation I’d expect FSR (KGB by another name) to be running operations against Western Europe. Chances are the two cops happened into the middle of an operation and got themselves ambushed.
Last name is Schmitt but I don’t know much else. The car-stop was about poaching in the area.

Exactly. Between dash cams, body cams, and CCTV mounted on every lamp post, there has to be video of the perps or their getaway vehicle.

When I was living about 60 miles away in Saarbrücken, the radio station in Kaiserslautern operated by the Armed Forces Radio Network kept me up to date on US news and Top 40 hit songs.
In Germany, a country that is the most stringent in Europe.
I don’t know how it is now but when I was living in Germany in the ‘60’s the people were scared to death of the police, very respectful and generally very tidy and law abiding. The police were extremely impressive, efficient and disciplined. Many of them were WW2 vets and looked it!!
