A few years ago I bought a new diesel Golf in the early spring. We had an unexpected snowstorm. I was caught in it. I ended up on a steeply graded road and with very little control of the vehicle...no sno tires on. I had a train of vehicles crowding behind me as I crept down the hill.
Finally they realized I was struggling and just managing to keep it in control. They opened about 300 feet behind me and let me continue my crawl at about 2 to 5 miles an hour. God bless standard shifts! We will made it home.
Watching out for the other guy is a big part of driving.
Ice storms are the absolute worst. I would rather have three feet of snow than even a moderate ice storm.
And the worst sound in the world to me is the sound of branches cracking in the middle of the night during an ice storm. That's a sure sign that your power is about to go out for a long time. That's the price you pay for living in suburbia with a lot of trees around you.
When I was a kid back in the 50s storms like this were a great thing. Wed make close to 30 each per day shoveling snow off walks and drives. Three such storms in the season would give us spending money for a year.

9/11 was probably the last time many people would ever listen to a supervisor when told “everything is fine”; (smart) people are much more likely to use their own judgment. The litigious atmosphere has enough people confident that if they say they have to leave because they “don’t feel well”, that is the end of the story - no threats or reprisals. Also, employers need to worry about employers who suffer as a result of the “stay at your desk” policies retaining a lawyer; I don’t think that was an issue 40 years ago.

I think a lot of shore homes damaged by Sandy weren’t owned by wealthy people at all; they were tax refugees from northeastern NJ who traded long commutes for a lower cost of living. Of course, on the news they show the multimillion oceanfront properties damaged (and those won’t end up looking ugly - they’d probably just be rebuilt better). The ones with huge stairways leading up to the front doors seemed more modest - and weren’t “on the beach”.
The Jersey Shore experienced a trend that also played out in western NJ where middle-class people fled there for lower costs and ended up rubbing elbows with year-round people of more limited means already living there; in western NJ there had been seasonal vacation homes in the woods and hills that were being replaced by year-round homes for those tax refugees (as well as some wealthy people).

Oh heck we’ve still got piles of snow from last weekends storm and two clippers that played further inches on top.......so very happy seeing the sun shinning since this morning. I’ve got icicles growing off my awnings.
Oh I don’t know....I suppose if they say it’s going to be “Historic” as some said they just name it for Historical purposes.
BTW we’re at 10 degrees with a windchill of -1

That’s great; nobody’s parking in HIS spot! One of the problems here is that parking is so bad in good times that people want to leave those placeholders out until the snow is practically gone. The neighborhoods were built over a century ago when nobody could foresee that every 17 year-old would be getting a car. In my town any new construction must have some off-street parking, but it is never enough to accommodate the number of vehicles that the new multi-family homes will bring. A couple of towns fight the blight by simply allowing no parking on any street from 2-6 am; that goes a long way towards discouraging illegal apartment conversions.
Road salt and car snow brushes are other examples.
