Family of Brashear junior hospitalized last week says he was attacked by same student multiple times

The family of a 17-year-old junior who was hospitalized last week after a fight at Brashear High School said it was the fourth time this academic year that the boy had been attacked by the same student and blamed school administrators for failing to take action to ensure his safety.

Video of the latest incident, which occurred Friday, shows a student lifting up the 17-year-old boy and slamming him head first into the ground in a school hallway, then stomping on his head. The boy was left unresponsive and was taken to a hospital by a city ambulance.

Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said the alleged aggressor was charged by school police with aggravated assault, and the principal, Kimberly Safran, has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave pending a district review of the incident.

The 17-year-old boy, who has an individualized education plan, suffered a concussion and other complications, including memory loss, trouble sleeping and is at times incoherent, according to his cousin, Eric Pettus.

“He isn’t at all himself,” Mr. Pettus said in an interview Tuesday afternoon.

Mr. Pettus said the concussion the boy sustained Friday was the third one this year from assaults involving the same student, an 18-year-old senior. The family does not know why the other student started targeting the 17-year-old, but they say there have been at least four incidents between the two.

Mr. Pettus said his cousin was previously attacked on Sept. 8, Sept. 14 and Dec. 15. Despite multiple earlier incidents, he said, the school did nothing to protect his cousin.

“The school has been aware that this bullying situation was occurring,” Mr. Pettus said.

This isn’t bullying. This is assault and battery and likely other possible charges, up to and perhaps including attempted homicide.

Why are they talking to the SCHOOL, when they should be calling the POLICE and do-nothing DA and pressing charges? If the school gets in the way, sue them as well.

There’s probably room for more than one criminal charge against school administrators. Note that school attendance is mandatory - the student has to be there. The district has a moral and legal obligation to protect them while they are in their charge. Multiple previous concussions ought to have been a clue. That these incidents weren’t acted upon is indicative of negligence and callous disregard for their duty and for student safety.

Yup sue the hell out of the school the administrators and the attacking student.

And try the attacker with attempted murder as a adult.

I would have pressed charges through the police department after the first incident, sued the family for civil rights violations, and sued the school for allowing a hostile learning environment.

Someone tried to bully my eldest in high school on the first week. One quick trip to the Vice Principal, dressed in my nicest suit, where I very calmly told them exactly what would happen if anyone touched my son after providing them the name and number of my attorney, stopped that nonsense immediately.

You mess with my kids and I will exact vengeance of biblical proportions.

In reading the article, this sounds like a really crap school, but hardly unusual. I note the principal got fired over this. Yeah, taxpayers are really losing this battle, and parents already lost.

In the small eastern Colorado town where I lived before moving here, bullies and thugs - pitbull breeders, drug dealers, Hills-Have-Eyes-type murderous yokels - ruled everything. I have a number of stories about the school and local government there. (Of course, in everyone’s mind, I was the problem! I had visited that town a lot of times riding my motorcycle around eastern Colorado and I thought it was just the perfect place! LOL I would always think “I would like to live here!” and then when I did move there IT WAS A NIGHTMARE!!! I’m used to people not liking me and I guess I am kinda shady, but these folks found me to be a handy, handy scapegoat. Long story. Some of the people were very nice, but they were all in thrall to the State. I ended up getting run out of town in classic style. Just ask R Perry fans; they have the video.)

One principal who had just started his job was fired for trying to enforce discipline on kids who basically did whatever screwed-up thing popped into their minds, at great expense: They had to pay him the rest of his 5-year contract salary and hire another principal so the kids could keep to their bullying/vandalism activities.

A lot of people don’t know what’s going on in schools now. A lot of parents with kids in school don’t really care - it’s a place for the kid to go so he’s out of the house.

Getting rid of the DOE would solve a lot of society’s problems. Lower taxes would enable folks to educate their kids without government interference. And some kids, like the 18-year-old antagonist, really don’t belong in school. They don’t benefit from an education. No, I don’t have a solution to that particular problem, but forcing responsible people to pay for kids like that to be warehoused in public schools certainly isn’t the answer.

Related story with blurred graphic video.

Not only does he toss the kid to the ground, the thug bully kicks the kid’s head.

Everyone acts stunned whenever there is gun play in schools. I wonder why it does not happen more often.

When I live in the City of Pittsburgh, I paid attention to the Public Schools there. On a regular basis, shrinking enrollment, year after year. It is predominantly black, even though the City is not.

Diversity at Pittsburgh Public Schools

Native languages spoken by students: 95
Countries represented in PPS: 57
African-American students: 53%
White students: 33%
Other races: 14%
English Language Learners: 1,108 https://www.pghschools.org/domain/17

Let me guess, the victim got suspended along with the felon attacker.

This crap is out of control. Arrest, charge and imprison the principal and school board for allowing this to happen.

Things will change very quickly
