A key Ukrainian national security official sat down today and told the country’s allies what they could do to help: please, calm down.
But also: Keep the weapons coming.
“We’re emphasizing this now and articulating to our partners that we cannot afford to let our economy collapse, so we also need help on this issue,” Ukraine National Security Council Chief Oleksiy Reznikov told BBC Ukraine on Monday. “After all, if people go into a state of panic, that’s a very dangerous situation for the country.”
“We are concerned about the availability of weapons to protect against Russian aggression. And when these weapons began to arrive in our country — this is a plus,” he said later in the interview. “Before this was not the case.”
Reznikov’s voice is one of a chorus of Ukrainian officials demanding that people remain calm, and that the country’s Western backers remain level-headed.
The country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said earlier this month that talk of the crisis was “big hype,” before suggesting to the Washington Post that the Russians might take Kharkiv, a city of 1.4 million.
It comes as the American, British, Australian, and German governments ordered partial drawdowns of their embassy staff in Kyiv, citing the risk of a Russian attack.
Both open-source analysts and Western intelligence services have said that Russia has moved a massive amount of combat troops to positions near the Ukrainian border, with some stationed in neighboring Belarus.

“Please calm down.”
It seems like everyone has their panties in a bunch over this except the Ukrainians.
Perhaps I’m wrong, but I get the distinct impression Putin is just yanking Biden‘s chain. Putin has no intention of invading Ukraine, he’s just toying with the idiot in the White House.
Which is really a dick move. It’s bad form to pick on those who are weak and retarded.
Emergency! Everybody to get from street!
The war dogs and MSM are the ones pumping it.
When war doesn’t happen, the defense contractors will be rich (and the American public poor,) and the MSM will say Biden got Putin to back down.
No, Biden started the fire when he said Russia could take part of Ukraine.
Maintaining 100k troops on Ukraine’s border is a pretty expensive bluff to keep going for long.
A bit silly but otherwise fun movie.
The problem is, when nothing happens, the Press will proclaim that “Biden Stared Putin Down”.
You guys are correct. Somehow someway Biden may take credit if no invasion occurs.
Hilariously, Brandon is doing even less than Obama did for Ukraine other than that plane load of arms. One planeload isn’t going to stop an army. Obama deployed U. S. Army airborne troops to Ukraine many times.
I don’t expect a full invasion but maybe Putin will push slightly beyond the 2014 borders in Donbas. Just enough to humiliate Brandon and show how useless NATO is without pissing off the Germans. That probably won’t happen until after the new pipline is fully operational. So this “crisis” is going to carry on for a while.
Weird. I actually signed up for an on-line Russian course because I wanted to be able to read the Russian language press about this.
I used to be able to read Russian quite well and understand spoken Russian moderately well (I never got to the point of being a fluent speaker, mostly for lack of opportunity). I thought this might be a good time to revive my Russian.
You can’t trust any media in any language nowadays, of course, so I figure I’ll cover all my bases and read it in several languages and then average it out…
As long as some Archduke doesn't go riding around in an open car.
Aren’t these the same Ukranian officials who talked to Rudy Guillani and Channel Rijon? Maybe Biden is getting even...
