Mega Iceberg – One of the Largest on Record – Released 150 Billion Tons of Freshwater Near Island
Scitechdaily ^ | Jan 24, 2022 | EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY (ESA)

In July 2017, a giant iceberg, named A-68, snapped off Antarctica’s Larsen-C ice shelf and began an epic journey across the Southern Ocean. Three and a half years later, the main part of iceberg, A-68A, drifted worryingly close to South Georgia. Concerns were that the berg would run aground in the shallow waters offshore. This would not only cause damage to the seafloor ecosystem but also make it difficult for island wildlife, such as penguins, to make their way to the sea to feed. Using measurements from satellites, scientists have charted how A-68A shrunk towards the end of its voyage, which fortunately prevented it from getting stuck. However, the downside is that it released a colossal 152 billion tonnes of freshwater close to the island, potentially having a profound effect on the island’s marine life.

When A-68 was spawned, it had a surface area of more than twice the size of Luxemburg – one of the largest icebergs on record.

It lost a chunk of ice almost immediately after being calved, resulting in the larger berg being renamed A-68A, and its offspring became A-68B. In April 2020, A-68A lost another chunk subsequently called A-68C.

What's interesting IMHO is the lack of mentioning how the Ocean levels have not been impacted by this disaster. I thought cities would be underwater by now.

I gotta hunch the fauna of South Georgia are pretty used to that stuff happening.

All the white sand beaches and palm trees on South Georgia Island are jeopardized by this terrible iceberg.

Well certain things of this earth happen as it ages and shifts.....icebergs are just one of them.

Makes you wonder how people will respond when God finally comes down and shows his righteous anger.

Larsen-C? What happened to Larsen-A and B? They’re gone???? So this is like a process that repeats itself over the years cyclically? And is an ongoing natural event? Well, cancel the 9-1-1 call to algore and Greta then.

OMG, Miami is now under four feet of 'fresh water', all the beaches are submerged and sharks are swimming toward Lake Okeechobee heading up I-95.

I guess these brilliant “scientists” aren’t interested in the facts that the melt is relatively slow in those cold waters and the currents dissipate that melted fresh water as it forms.

LOL, but actually, in this case the ice was part of an ice shelf, so it was already mostly underwater. The concern is the huge ice sheets that are totally on land, and if a large piece breaks off, most of that will displace water (and make a big splash).

In any case, as long as DC is the prime target, I’m good.

people (not necessarily you) need to learn how to do some math. A gallon of water weighs 8.33 pounds and requires 231 cubic inches of space (volume). 150 billion tons of water is about 18 trillion gallons. 18 trillion gallons of water is about 4.15 quadrillion cubic inches.

A square kilometer has roughly 1.5 billion square inches in it. the entire surface area of the oceans of the world is roughly 350 million square kilometers.

350,000,000 square kilometers is 525,000,000,000,000,000 square inches. That’s 525 quadrillion square inches.

4.15 quadrillion cubic inches of wholly new water that has never been part of the ocean before would raise the surface of the ocean .0079 inches. Thats 79 thousands of an inch.

The current fear mongering of 10+ feet of sea level increase would require hundreds of quintillions of cubic inches of new water to accomplish just to go straight up at the current banks of the sea. To actually conform to the shape of the land would take an even greater volume.

"...It’s one of those....”so what”....stories..."

Speak for yourself. Now I won't be able to sleep at night knowing
that a giant iceberg is plying and threatening the Antarctic oceans.

And don't you try to tell me that this has happened 67 million
times previously in Earth's history. No - THIS time it is
an 'Existential Crisis'(tm) that threatens to destroy all life
on the planet!

So what d'yall think? Should I apply for a job as a
writer for the 'Bee' - or do I need more practice?

"What's interesting IMHO is the lack of mentioning how the Ocean levels have not been impacted by this disaster."

The iceberg was part of an "Ice Shelf". That means it was floating when it broke off. Floating ice displaces its total weight before, as well as after, it melts. Melting has ZERO effect on sea level.

Yeah - they make it sound like there was a huge lake of fresh water that suddenly dumped into the ocean. Even that - would that have done much harm?

A few weeks ago the Pacific NW got a bunch of rain (some days were 5+ inches in spots) and rivers flooding and pouring all that extra fresh water out into the ocean. I didn’t hear anybody complaining about the saltwater critters.

An aside. Years ago a school bus almost went over a cliff in Seattle due to the city not using salt on the roads due to pollution into Puget Sound.

My son - probably around ten at the time pondered that. “Dad - Puget Sound is saltwater - right?”

They did change the rules after the school bus thing.

“people (not necessarily you) need to learn how to do some math”

I have a BS in Math and worked as an engineer for 30 years, now that I’m retired and living among normal people (i.e., non Dilberts) I see “some math” has been dumbed down in our society. So while your explanation seems right on, it goes over most peoples’ heads, try to put in simple terms:

1. Water expands as it turns to ice, which means a cup of water is smaller than that same cup of water as ice.

2. Most of an iceberg is underwater. Put an ice cube in a glass of water and see most is below the surface.

Which means as ice melts there is little impact on the water level.

Unfortunately the Algores and gretas are not fact checked by the media so the “ 10+ feet of sea level increase” in plausible to a lot of people.

No, that's 79 ten-thousands of an inch. Or 7.9 thousands of an inch. Or about 0.2mm. About twice the thickness of a sheet of copy paper.

(former machinist here... 0.0079" would have been significant to me in my work, but it matters not at all to the world's oceans)

A very natural event and whatever changes the melted fresh water makes in the environment will be met with LIFE adapting in a variety of ways, but altogether rest assured LIFE will not be defeated.
