Ukraine is about to become Afghanistan 2.0 for Americans hoping to evacuate.
Fox News Channel is reporting that the Biden Administration will not be able to evacuate U.S. citizens from Ukraine.
“Given that the President has said military action by Russia could come at any time. The US government will not be in a position to evacuate US citizens. So US citizens, currently present in Ukraine should plan accordingly.” Arrange commercial flights,” a State Dept. official is quoted as saying on a phone call.
The announcement is reminiscent of the administration’s feckless handling of the evacuation of Afghanistan — when thousands of Americans were trapped behind enemy lines.
“We’ve authorized the departure of some US government employees, but we have ordered the departure of all family members of US government employees at our Embassy in Kiev. The State Department has also elevated our travel advisory for Ukraine to level four,” the State Dept. official said.

Truly. If neither Russia nor China makes the big move now (and I think “now” is any time between today and 2024) then they just never will and people should stop ever taking such a possibility seriously. This is it. This is their chance. Why wouldn’t they take it? There will never be a better opportunity.

Will they be obstructing private citizens’ efforts to evacuate people this time, too?

Not the point. Yeah, you have a decent chance of becoming collateral damage if you stick around and get caught out while the Russians and Ukrainians are shooting at each other. But there are ways out, as in heading west, not just the airport and it’s not necessarily a gruesome death sentence if you don’t make it to the airport. People want to compare this to the fall of Afghanistan. No, it’s not safe to remain but this is not Afghanistan and the Russians are not the Taliban doing their duty to allah.
