Could DeSantis Beat Trump?
National Review ^ | January 21, 2022 | RICH LOWRY

Posted on 01/21/2022 10:18:30 AM PST by conservative98

The past and current master of the GOP sees a future threat arising.

[cut]

“It was a mistake to ever embrace Donald Trump, and now we want to be the party of Adam Kinzinger.”

[cut]

Would DeSantis be audacious enough to run against Trump in 2024? The case against waiting is that it’s extremely unlikely that the governor can maintain his exalted status in the party until 2028.

On the other hand, the case against running in 2024 is that it involves the enormous risk of encountering the business end of the Trump buzz saw, which could change DeSantis’s image in the party forever.

But Trump cannot get enough independent voters.

Of course he can. More importantly, he also attracts a lot of support among DEMOCRATS in key swing states. It's not uncommon for him to have more than 40% of the attendees show up who are NOT registered Republicans.

The problem for Trump is that he has a very tough time attracting a certain type of independent voter -- namely, the suburban dingbat Karen who has her kids locked down 24 hours a day and has a lifetime supply of face masks in her SUV.

Trump/DeSantis

It has a nice ring to it.

It won’t hurt with the illegal alien vote either! /s

(even though he is Italian)

For the Natural Born Citizen crowd (myself included/charter member)

“Ronald Dion DeSantis was born on September 14, 1978, in Jacksonville, Florida, the son of Karen (née Rogers) and Ronald Daniel DeSantis.[1] He is of Italian descent as his great-great-grandmother and great-great-grandfather were from Italy. His great-great-grandfather Salvatore Storti immigrated to the United States in 1904, eventually settling in Pennsylvania. His great-great-grandmother Luigia Colucci moved to the U.S. to be with her husband in 1917.”

” Moderates will flock to him. Not Trump”

There is nothing at all, moderate about DeSantis. he is a strong conservative as are those who support and applaud him. He is a dedicated Conservative.

That being said, I will support Trump if he is the nomineee, or anyone including Pee Wee Herman against the totalitarians. I would support DeSantis at the top of the ticket if Trump does not run.

And you think DeSantis alone would attract the face mask/ vaccine Karen’s??? Lol

He is at the forefront of anti-mask mandates and anti vaccine mandates .

There’s a reason why the call it “free Florida.”

The type of “unique voter” you describe already has a name...leftist democrat. They will only vote the way the View tells them too and it ain’t for any conservative.

So I hate to break it you but DeSantis has no edge over Trump and he knows it and def will be on Trumps team.

I can’t think of a potential VP selection that would eclipse Desantis; of course, the political landscape may be entirely different by then.

Reality check for DeSantis supporters -- on FR and at National Review:

Which states did Mitt Romney lose in 2012 that DeSantis would win in 2024?

At this point, I'd say the best he could do is win Florida, Ohio and Iowa.

Assume he gets 1 EV from Maine and gets all 5 from Nebraska. By my count, that gets him to 263 electoral votes.

For all his flaws, Donald Trump was able to do something that Republicans hadn't done in decades: win lots of EVs in Rust Belt states. These voters aren't going to support some establishment GOP jackass under any circumstances -- which is why they never supported Bush I, Dole, Bush II, McCain, or Romney.

No, he wouldn't. That's my point.

He is at the forefront of anti-mask mandates and anti vaccine mandates.

So is Trump.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here.

‘I think 4 of them would have beat him 1 on 1.’

no...

‘I think 1 on 1 against DeSantis I think DJT loses and it wouldn’t even be close.’

yes; I think that would happen in a matchup between them, but no, I don’t think that matchup will occur, becasue I doubt DeSantis will run...

‘But Trump cannot get enough independent voters.’

he can get a sizeable amount of them, een those who bailed on him in 2020, just because Biden is a non-starter...

‘Plus he will be 79.’

this is the most salient point of all...the electorate is in the mood for a fresh start, regardless of party; octogenarians do not signal fresh...

that being said, I see DeSantis refraining due to familial concerns...

DeSantis barely won his last election

That was back in 2017. He wasn't a rock star like he is now. Also, in the past 5 years, you've had many Conservatives flee blue states to become residents in Florida.

Which states did Mitt Romney lose in 2012 that DeSantis would win in 2024?

A decent question, if we were on the heels of 2024, and DeSantis was a candidate for President.

What I would propose as a much more relevant question along those same lines regarding the next Presidential election, that should actually be of much more concern, now, is what has Trump done to restore election integrity in those states he won in 2016, but lost in 2020? Because if that’s not corrected, no Republican may stand a chance. Unless you don’t think election integrity had anything to do with it, of course. Thanks.

Could DeSantis Beat Trump?

Yes.

DeSantis is politically savvy. Trump never learned to keep his mouth shut. The old adage of "Wisdom is knowing when to speak your mind and when to mind your speech" never occurred to him.

Yeah, President Trump ought to take political talk lessons, from Georgia Republicans.

“The Deep State tries to gin up trouble between Trump and DeSantis. I don’t buy it”
+++++++

Bingo! Their worst nightmare is Trump establishing residency somewhere other than Florida, and then he and DeSantis running on the same ticket. Trump/DeSantis equals President Trump for four years and then DeSantis for eight.

Of course, the Never-Trumpers at NRO do not want anything close to that type of ticket. They will be pushing someone like Rubio, Liz Cheney, Nikki Haley, or even JEB! again.

Trump is the only Republican who can win a national election.

When Trump retires, the White House will be out of reach for any Conservative, for decades.

If massive immigration continues, it will be out of reach permanently.
