While Obama was great at reading speeches, he appeared rather doofusy when he spoke off the cuff, and made gaffes like "57 states", "corpse-man instead of "corpsman", his "Muslim faith" when he was supposed to say "Christian faith", etc. The theory then was that Valerie Jarret was the power behind the throne.
