A violin-maker has used components including steamed pear, berries and spring water to create a vegan violin.

Padraig O'Dubhlaoidh made the instrument, entirely free of animal products, in his Malvern Hills workshop during the coronavirus lockdown.

Maybe I shouldn't find this story rather amusing, but the growing cult of Veganism just seems to get sillier all the time. And for £8,000.00, this thing better give off the screams of the vegetables to equal the traditional catgut. :P

“animal-based glues”

I remember the saying when I was a kid about horses going to the glue factory.

The yellow mucilage glues are old hooves.

there have been non animal based glues around for years.

After a few days it hits a sour note.

And then a few days later it sounds completely rotten.

It may be vegan, but it looks like a bad cut of beef steak.

A lot of Luthiers are using fish glues now.

I use Titebond and cyanoacrylate.

Ingredients found in Titebond wood glues include polyvinyl acetate, in Original Wood Glue and Premium Wood Glue; diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, in Ultimate Wood Glue; polymethylenepolyphenyl isocyanate, in Polyurethane Glue; N-methylolacrylamide, in Premium Wood Glue; and paraffinic oil, in Original Wood Glue. Additional ingredients found in more than one type of Titebond wood glue include water, vinyl alcohol and aluminum chloride.
