The 10 biggest US airlines have warned that the impending switch-on of 5G mobile phone services will cause "major disruption" to flights.
They said the start of Verizon and AT&T 5G mobile phone services, planned for Wednesday, would cause a "completely avoidable economic calamity".
Airlines fear C-band 5G signals will disrupt planes' navigation systems, particularly those used in bad weather.
The warning was issued in a letter sent to US aviation authorities.
The chief executives of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines were joined by others in saying: "Immediate intervention is needed to avoid significant operational disruption to air passengers, shippers, supply chain and delivery of needed medical supplies", including vaccine distribution.
The BBC has seen the letter outlining their urgent concerns.
It was sent to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, as well as the head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the chair of the Federal Communications Commission and the director of the National Economic Council.

The issue is NOT 5G.
Assuming they define C-band in the traditional (non-EW) way, only thing i know aircraft use there is radar altimeters.
I could see that being of concern if real.
“I could see that being of concern if real.”
Airlines and phone companies have different allottments in the C-band.
Phone companies are increasingly getting closer to the 4.2 GHz min assigned to airlines.
TikTok Videos of planes crashing? Gangnam style.
You’d think it would have been since it’s been around for 5+ years.
Correct. Which is the entire point of my post. It takes the FAA forever to test stuff. They're notorious.
They certainly do... and in another 3- 4 decades, the FAA will get off their collective taxpayer-funded asses and finally test what they should've been testing all along.
“SK has had 5g for a decade, I’ve flown (as Pilot) monthly, not a problem, I call BS”
The issue is NOT 5G.
The first rollouts of 5G were in 2019.
I believe South Korea is farthest ahead in 5G usage.

China had to install 5G in all areas it uses its cashless digital currency. Many articles written about 5 G emplacement for their cashless system, now wide spread in China.Trillions of financial data is transferred in milli seconds , time stamped. Their satellites play a role, they developed the satellites first, their own GPS system, second was 5G, now their cashless digital system is up and running. Expected to be fully operational in less than a year. There is more to 5G than meets the eye.
Our next global financial meltdown, things will become much clearer ( if you keep your eyes on the ball). Sovereign debt meltdowns will be averted by numerous countries instating sovereign cashless digital systems ( those will fail), which will only be a temporary “ fix”.
Has there ever been any communications development that the Airline industry didn’t claim that it would crash all their airplanes? GPS will kill us all. No really it will this time.

Not the point. The FAA has to issue the clearances.
Cellphones didn’t interfere with the planes. The phones companies were worried that there systems could not handle fast moving phones in planes.

BS. First rollout was 2019 in US and Korea. TELUS 2020. SaskTel 2021.
Canada does not use the 3.7 band.
Even with their lower 3.5 band they are setting restrictions on airport operation.
