~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska

NEoffutt1

Offutt Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force base south of Omaha, adjacent to Bellevue in Sarpy County, Nebraska. It is the headquarters of the U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), the 557th Weather Wing, and the 55th Wing (55 WG) of the Air Combat Command (ACC), the latter serving as the host unit.

NEoffutt5

With the disestablishment of SAC June 1, 1992, Offutt transitioned to Air Combat Command and became the host for the United States Strategic Command’s headquarters.

In 2005, Offutt began several major renovations. The on-base Wherry housing area was demolished for replacement with new housing. A new fire house, AAFES mini-mall, and U.S. Post Office were completed in 2006. Additionally, the Air Force Weather Agency broke ground on a new facility which was completed in 2008.

The new headquarters for STRATCOM, the Command and Control Facility (C2F), was expected to be operational in September 2018.

The 557th Weather Wing, formerly the Air Force Weather Agency, is headquartered at Offutt AFB. It is the lead weather center of the United States Air Force.

The 557th Weather Wing is a United States Air Force formation and its lead military meteorology center. It delivers environmental situational awareness worldwide to the Air Force, the Army, joint warfighters, Unified Combatant Commands, the national intelligence community, and the Secretary of Defense.

NEoffutt4

The 2nd Weather Group delivers timely, relevant and specialized terrestrial, space and climatological global environmental intelligence to joint warfighters, DOD decision-makers, national agencies, and allied nations for the planning and execution of missions across the complete spectrum of military operations through the operation, sustainment and maintenance of Air Force Weather's $277 million strategic center computer complex, production network and applications.

Love’s Greatest Gift
Read: Isaiah 53:1–6

We all, like sheep, have gone astray. Isaiah 53:6

My son Geoff was leaving a store when he saw an abandoned walking frame (a mobility aid) on the ground. I hope there isn’t a person back there who needs help, he thought. He glanced behind the building and found a homeless man unconscious on the pavement.

Geoff roused him and asked if he was okay. “I’m trying to drink myself to death,” he responded. “My tent broke in a storm, and I lost everything. I don’t want to live.”

Geoff called a Christian rehabilitation ministry, and while they waited for help, he ran home briefly and brought the man his own camping tent. “What’s your name?” Geoff asked. “Geoffrey,” the homeless man answered, “with a G.” Geoff hadn’t mentioned his own name or its uncommon spelling. “Dad,” he told me later, “that could have been me.”

Geoff once struggled with substance abuse himself, and he helped the man because of the kindness he’d received from God. Isaiah the prophet used these words to anticipate God’s mercy to us in Jesus: “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6).

Christ, our Savior, didn’t leave us lost, alone, and hopeless in despair. He chose to identify with us and lift us in love, so that we may be set free to live anew in Him. There’s no greater gift.James Banks

Where would you be without Jesus? How can you be His hands and feet for someone in need?

Thank You, Jesus, for coming to rescue me. Help me to join in Your search-and-rescue mission and to share Your love with someone who needs You today.

Read Remade in the Image of Jesus .

Howdy, lauren.

I heard there was some snow around the Dallas area. Were you lucky enough to miss out on that fun?
Wish we’d been.

It’s an incredible facility. Over the decades it has brought thousands of great people to the Omaha metro area—including my brother-in-law and my youngest son’s father-in-law. Thousands of upstanding people from all over the country have retired in the area. In the early 40’s the Martin Aircraft Company built an enormous factory for production of the B-26 Martin Marauder and the B-29 Superfortress. The B-29’s produced there were superior to those produced at any other plant in the country. Their quality was such that Colonel Tibbets came to Omaha to hand pick the planes that would bring WW2 to an end with the atomic bomb missions over Japan. My Mom left her position as a one-room schoolhouse teacher to work on the B-26’s there. That tremendous effort brought thousands of people to the area from all over the country.
I was born and raised in Omaha and enjoyed the annual Offutt Airshows along with the frequent sight of a vast array of Air Force planes in the skies over home. One of the most fascinating planes seen were the Vulcan bombers of the RAF which were frequently deployed to Offutt. In the late 50’s and early 60’s, Nike Hercules and Nike Zeus SAM missile bases ringed the Omaha area as Offutt was at the top of Soviet target lists. Of course they’re all long gone, but were a reminder of the critical role played by Offutt in the Cold War.
Offutt had a great Air Museum. It was relocated to site off of I-80 between Omaha and Lincoln and is a great destination for any military aviation enthusiast. Few military aviation museums can boast of the collection there. Restorations are ongoing and can often be viewed by visitors. It’s one of only a few museums with the remarkable RAF Vulcan, a B-1, and an SR-71.

Yo radu, good weekend, son was over last night for dinner and hanging, he's taking this week off for vacation to take care of some other business which includes me helping him with a few projects.

Did visit Robin and the pups yesterday; poor pups still have to do their 'business' in the snow, LOL.

Did you get hit by the storm that came through?
