Notice that they don’t tell you what the number of daily deaths were 10 months ago. They were coming off a surge of a daily average of about 275 to 300 per day in January 2021.
By March they were probably cheering the good news of only 45 deaths per day.

CA has more than twice as many cases as the highest peak back in Jan 2021, but 1/5 the deaths. So less than 1/10th the case fatality rate this time around. And assuming we follow other areas, it will be a relatively short but intense spike in cases that will drop off as quickly as it rose.
